Every Host has things its missing.

Sascha can't stand cubase, I can't stand logic and am completely unable to use it.

That's why there are different applications, to suit different needs :)

Post

I know, different strokes for different people.
Yet, there's a whole shitload of "absolute" shortcomings in SX.

No, we must all get extremly defensive in our choice of hosts.
Preferrably with ugly name calling.

You....you.....you......mmmmmm.......cow!

I have a love hate relationship with SX. I strongly feel I have no choice on the matter. It's the second best (IMO) of all DAW, but the unfortunate thing is I can't live without too many plugins or developemt tools (or the speed) of my current PC set up.

I've gotten 90% there, but the nag says I ain't happy yet, like I was with logic long long time a go.

That f**king workflow. And it's not like I don't know how to fully take advantage of SX3. I know them both inside out. Logic still wins in the most important thing and I hate it for it.

Depends on your opinion of absolute, I suppose.

There are merely minor niggles here, and the main bits I use (Midi recording, editing, audio recording and editing, mixing effecting sounds etc.) work great for my needs. Nothing much missing, and only a few niggles.

The accoustics of my tracking room are more of a concern than the app I use.

So little evidence of "absolute" shortcomings from my POV.

right, just like the absolute shortcomings in logic

My God, don't you get tired of slagging Cubase, Sascha? I would think that everyone knows you prefer Logic by now...

Jonathan1977: btw, Cubase has always displayed chords:

What's that??? Cm7??? :-o

Ya, any cubase thread I usually expect him to come in and growl about "shortcomings" and how superior he is using logic 5.5

Post

I know about the shortcomings of Logic as well - pretty much that is.
But right now there's not much to do about it, others than getting a Mac (and quite some of my most hated shortcomings seem to still be there in v7).

However, yes, I *do* complain a lot about Cubase. But it's not exactly unreasoned.
I mean, it's not about me wanting Cubase to be like Logic, I'm also not blind, so I *do* know about the nice things there are as well (for instance, the audio editing is miles ahead).
But, there's such an amount of most obvious shortcomings, especially regarding ergonomics, that I can only shake my head in disbelief.
Anything I'm complaining about or asking for would just be there to make everybody's life easier.

What's so bad about proper dual monitor support?

What's so bad about a configurable mixer (optional of course)?

What's so bad about re-configurable (read: drag and drop) effect chains?

What would be so bad if the entire channel settings wouldn't be lost in case you change a VSTi?

What's so bad about stereo FX available on a mono track?

What about a properly working solo function?

Why not have "linkable" plugin windows (optional again), so opening a plugin UI would just close the previously loaded one, so one wouldn't be drowned in windows after 1 minute of work?

What about a channel strip that wouldn't make me laugh if it wasn't that pathetic (it simply doesn't work for VSTis)?

What about finally bringing back proper reclocking, something VST did extraordinarily well?

What about getting the "audio to MIDI" functionality back, so I can extract a MIDI trigger track from, say, a kick or snare?

What about proper performance under low latencies (the difference between, say, 128 samples and 1024 is incredible and not justified as other hosts don't suffer from that)?

What about experiencing no crackles until the system is indeed maxed out (pretty much a wellknown thing, again especially valid when using low latencies)?

The list could go on... and I haven't even been talking about bugs (even if the implementation of the solo functionality almost qualifies as a bug).

These - entirely - are things almost every Cubase user could (and would) benefit from. In the (small) liste above there's not a single thing that would qualify as esoteric or could be answered with "different strokes...".
And well, I'd complain just the same way in case I had never even seen Logic in all my life.
I actually even did - those that have been members of the Cubase Yahoo group back in the days of VST 3.x will know.
If SX was my main host I would most likely complain even more, as I had no alternatives.
Comparing things with Logic is pretty much valid though. Take it as some "role model", partially showing how things can be done as well.
Oh, and before I forget: I have been complaining about Logic just as much, if not more.

Just so much (for now)...

 Man, you can really lay it out. I do agree, I tire of many things too. As we speak, I'm strugging to get Cubase to work properly under low latancies, so touche!

I just love the damned thing too much, I'm imprinted on it and there probably never will be any turning back. It's a big, f**ked-up mixing board, but it's my big, f**ked-up mixing board that I know inside and out. Hey: maybe Cubase is "vintage" now.

And I'm just poking fun anyway; I'm just impressed with your prodigous output, and I commend you for taking your sequencer of choice to task as well. :D

That fuction is absolutely nonsense, useless. Just waste cpu power. What I want is something like that:
I mark the chord symbol, and arrange my song according my chord symbol indicate. I don't need the chord shows in realtime under the cursor!!

That's not so hard to program ,right?? Why so many years they didn't think about it?

And I do hope they can make some update for midi function. Just like a Pattern Brush tool in sonar or somethingelse creatively helpful to make things easy. So many years there's nothing improved in Midi fuction!!
They always think about spending lots of money to make a dongle!!!!

Quite agree with your point.

Sascha it doesn't help one bit to constantly do these lists here in KVR. You should start actively doing that in cubase.net and you might even accomplish something.

Kingston, for what it's worth (oh, and yes, you can start laughing now, I'm as well): Guess who's running the german Cubase mailing list? No shit, it's yours truly!
A pretty small list but there's at least 3-4 of their programmers on board.

They are pretty aware of all these points and we even started collecting a list about possible improvements that I'm going to compile more or less soon (the subscribed Steinbergers even asked for that).

I don't like cubase.net too much, btw. It's not exactly freedom of spech there.

But anyways, let's see what they have up their sleeves for Frankfurt. Probably even a v4? I'm just a bit afraid that it woild again add some new features (liquid audio for instance) without anything else being streamlined. From v2 to v3 seemed to a rather mediocre step for most people. I don't think warp audio is used all that much (guess that's what people are using Live for)... for my personal needs it's been just two things: Relative snap (finally!) and the slightly improved channel strip (if it'd only work properly with the extended settings window).
