I'm assuming it is Wavelab ha ha but any cheaper editors with good VST support. I am hearing bad things about SF8 and A2 regarding handling of VST's. I can't wait until Acoustica gets VST support.

audacity is free and you can use VST,

but no realtime, thats the only downside.
sound is vibration, vibration is life

Audacity is really free if you ask me. It does not do markers or regions. I don't really trust it with my files.

yyyup. Waaaaavvveeeellllaaabbbbbb 6. :D

I think Adobe's Audition supports VST and Direct X as well...Not sure what it costs on the street though.

Peace

I recommend, stick to SF7 if you dont like SF8 and use DX-VST wrapper creator Like Spin audio. Nothing comes close to SF as far as it is ease of use, stabilty and features in wave editing.

I didn't know there was a difference...

SF8 takes FOREVER just to open and load plug-ins. At least that's my problem with it.

sony has screwed it up well like they did acid. its again media manger ,dot net blah blah problem which i face. though I uninstalled it and revert back to SF7.

Acoustica will be good competetor in future I guess. Its low price tag is alluring. if it gets ACID and VST support I will get it.

SF8 doesn't come with a media manager. You sure you've actually used it? :P As for boot times, it only scans plugins when you add new ones/remove old ones, otherwise it boots near instantaneously. I don't know how it acts if you have a collection of, lets say, more plug ins than you'll ever use, but for me it boots in literally milliseconds (excluding the times when it has to add/remove plug in information.) Maybe i bought a lucky magic super version of it though. :P

A lot of problems people seem to have is related to their lack of registry knowledge. Whenever you uninstall/update a program 9/10 times some detritus is left behind, although at times they say an uninstall is unecessary, we are talking about windows combined with sometimes bad installers/uninstallers here....

Open start menu, type regedit in the run box and look through:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

See all those entries related to programs you don't even have anymore? and entries related to past versions of software you have updated...they can cause issues you know. Get to know your registry and all these silly little problems simply won't occur. I know you could argue that it's not your job, but like any lazy ass :P it actually is, it's your comp, your money that paid for it, you bloody well take care of it. :P

I dont know about media manager but at the time of installation it says.

"sound forge requires Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 and .Net Framework version 1.1 service pack 1. would you like to open your browser to the download page for these components now?"

perhaps your machine already has .NET installed that's why you did not get this message.

Yeah, more than likely. I use other programs that require it, so whenever i do an re/install, that gets thrown in without even thinking about it.

May or may not be what you're looking for, but both Nero Ultra, for about $50-$70, and Magix Audio Cleaning Lab, for about $30, each have dedicated wave editors that accept VST effects.

You can download the Nero demo at www.nero.com. Fully functional for 30 days. Gotta be a little careful to uncheck unneeded stuff during install, because it's really bloaty, and wants to grab all the file extensions it can. It's also got a multitrack recorder that accepts vsts and has a built-in drum machine that lets you load your own samples to make kits. Weird set of applications, considering it's mostly for burning DVDs and CDs.

Take care,

I've yet to find a standalone wave editor (besides Wavelab) that does what Wavelab does: allow you to load up a tray of fx and preview them in real time while you play the file. Now, I haven't seen the latest SF or Audition, but the last time I looked all those tools offered was a lame 'preview' button for an individual effect. I cannot live without realtime processing of multiple effects; it's just essential to mastering.

Given that Steinberg has completely forgotten they even sell Wavelab Essential, and given I refuse to shell out six or seven bills for the full Wavelab, I'm all over any lower cost tool that does realtime multifx. Anybody know of one?

(BTW SONAR also does it very well, but it's too much hassle to deal with when editing a single file).
