Ok, I was looking at some fancy heavy metal guitar libraries, but they all appear to be in Kontackt, HALion, or Giga format - none of which I can use!!!!
Are there any good metal guitar soundfonts? I just need power chords and maybe some whammy-bar dives.
All info appreciated!

Surely not the answer you hoped for,but can't you just convert these formats to soundfonts?

If I coughed up for ESC, I suppose I could.. I'd like to avoid buying Yet More Software (lol) but if that's the only way I can get anything reasonable.. oh well.. I'll do it.

I don't know many good metal guitar libs at all,let alone in sf format.I guess you'll have to buy YMS.
Or do it by hand

Heh.. might actually be cheaper to pick up a used Ibanez and be done with it! I can get something playable for around US$200 used..

"Monzter Guitars II" will be released soon. We are going to have a SoundFont version for it with all release samples separated. (Sf2 does not support release samples)

Hi there woolyloach,
I don't know your exact DAW setup and/or what prgs. you can/can't use, your budget, etc., but have you heard of or tried using the Slayer / Slayer2 VSTi soft synths? They're not too bad, especially if you put them through Amplitube, Izotope Trash, Simulanalog Guitar Suite (which is a FREE VST plug-in), etc. No offense, but, I've strayed from using SoundFonts almost altogether, since they're pretty limited in their functionality.
Also, you can poke around on GOOGLE or something to that effect and try to find some free VSTi that may have guitar sounds.
Here's a few links to help you out if you'd like :

I'm sure there are more links, but there should be plenty of free VSTi listed in those 4 above that may have some guitar VSTi. Hope this helps & good luck!

You could as well try to find a clean electric guitar soundfont and run it through some plugins.
Thing being that a large part of a convincing guitar sound is the sympathetic interaction of the distortion. Example: A sampled pre-distorted single A note along with a sampled pre-distorted single E note will sound entirely different from two clean sampled notes running into one distortion unit together. That's a large part of any overdriven guitar sound.
Having said that, there's some (apparently) pretty good clean electric guitar soundfont for free at Audioshots' Auditorium. No idea whether they sampled the bridge humbucker though - that'd be a requirement for anything metal.

Wow, it's snowing information!
I haven't tried Slayer2, I can download the demo and see how it works out.. can't hurt to try, thanks for the info!
I saw the "Monzter Guitars II" stuff but didn't see SF2 listed as a format, that's an option.
Sascha, I'll also give that a shot - I have some amp-sim VST I use to trash up my synths, it's worth a try to see what I can do with 'em!
Thanks to everyone for all the info!

My advice is to use clean guitar samples and amp simulators. Sample libraries does not behave right. The distortion varies a lot in characther when you play different tones together. Even if you play just single tones, the last tone will hang over to the next, making different sounds depending on the interval played.
The powerchord is created because of amplified octaves inside the amp. There is a lot happening inside the amp that is impossible to capture with sampling. The VST effect Guitarsuite JCM900 is excellent. I use their SD1 or DS1 pedal as a soft clipper before the JCM900.

I tried the Ultimate Guitar Kit soundfont through Guitar Suite the other day, and it sounded pretty good. It's more for late '70s/early '80s metal/hard rock (Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Pink Floyd, Saxon, etc.) Running UGK through Green Machine II will get you a crunchier sound.
Buy my cd here (Prog rock/synth pop/classical/soundtrack-ish music):

I could probably manage to put up some heavily picked looped guitar multisamples one day, so if anybody feels the need to compile them into a soundfont...

I can ask the developer if he plans to make SF2s of these but his demos sound amazing.

But I think they're patterns, rather than multisamples.Mr. Tunes wrote:http://store.cellarroom.de/

A bit hard to tell from the website, regarding what's included in the big Kontakt version.
