Because that would be a total pain in the arse for those of us who dont want to use the Mixer view?
The only thing I've ever used the Track View audio bit for is automating parameters of audio FX. I was going to write about how it's done in other apps but A) you know B) it's starts usability flamewars. :hihi:
Yeah, but I've always used them for more than that.
I'm used to it (the 2 tracks thing, not the flamewars). I just find it frustrating in Sonar to have, say, 8 MIDI tracks and 8 audio tracks for 1 instance of GPO when I feel I should be using just 8 MIDI in the track view and 8 Audio in the Mixer.
I'd find it frustrating not to be able to relate an instrument output and the FX automation on that output with the MIDI that triggered it without having to change views to one I dont use.

Maybe it should just be configurable.

Options>Global>Show Instrument Tracks in Track View
I can just hide the audios in the track view and the midis in the mixer, but sooner or later you need either one or the other back again and find yourself pressing 'M' and trying to find the channel that matches the midi.
Suggestion : Name the MIDI and audio channels well and it wouldnt take any time to find them...

or

Suggestion : Group each MIDI/audio out pair into a folder of their own, so you can locate them together (one reason why nested folders would be nice)
By which time the keyboard is smashed in a frenzy, coffee is thrown across the room in rage and I shake the monitor violently before slunking to my knees getting into a foetal position and just weeping....
wuss. :hihi:

I think I may just have one of those hygenic compulsive disorders...

TRACK VIEW MUST BE CLEAN... CLEEEAAAANNNN!!!

I'll get used to the 2 tracks thing. I'll have to demo Sonar 5 a bit more as I think that proper use of Folder Tracks might help to store away audio outputs that I'm not using.

In fact, "Track Presets" is half the battle won, really.

So do I. Makes life hard to live sometimes. :)

Because that would bugger up envelopes on the audio tracks. I never open the mixer since I want to automate using envelopes.

I think whyterabbyt's idea (auto-hide instrument tracks in track view) is neat: it doesn't change the underlying structure of the track view (ie. easier to code!). 'Course, if you wanted to automate FX/volume envelopes on the audio track, you'd have to unhide it, but you would as it is now anyway.

I think I may be missing a major point, simply that I don't need to use the Mixer at all or simply just for monitoring levels during playback? i.e. keeping the major functionality entirely in the Track View whilst composing?

I never use the mixer view. At all.

Can I admit to using it occasionally :-) Seriously, only for viewing large quantities of level meters simultaneously, not for using any of the controls (would like to see a "Meter Bridge" view without any of the mixer controls).

I imagine mixer/console view is much more useful for someone handling live audio sessions, allowing them to automate the faders "by touch" to make small tweaks.

I'd rather use envelopes in track view, but can definitely see the mixer's use to people coming from the hardware studio world.

Wouldn't they just get a control surface though? The mixer view (because of computer GUI limitations like a single mouse pointer) doesn't really satisfy a "real" hardware person.

In fact, I'm not sure who an on-screen mixer is really meant to satisfy...

One may also argue why the heck most software synths *must* have these silly hardware-looking 3-d rendered knobs on them! :D

Yeah, a control surface would be more immediately tactile, but at least the presentation on screen would be familiar. It's sort of a half-way step in that regard.

Oh, I think I've argued about knobs vs sliders in the past enough already :-)

'bout what product are you talking on page 7? Sonar or MC?

MCpro isn't available in Europe, but in the States. Is it out, since MC3 is out :)

it's amazing what you can do for 39 bugs. but as Joseph complained the ease of use (which I think it's not as dramatical as he wrote) is HomeStudio the same or a bit harder?

Karlchen
P.S. now I wisper so that the other's don't hear and I'll get beaten: is T2 (I dn't u th wrd) a bit easier? But MC3 more powerful? more complete?
