Hi fellas!

I'm a newcomer and soon to become an owner of Samplitude native DAW. Here is my situation: Looking for a great DAW for mixing

I've purchased lately PTools m-powered and been working with it a bit but i've been very disappointed because of the limited amount of playback audio track (32 max) (cuz to tlel the truth i dont have the 10.000$ to go and buy the big rigs. And since i saw that M-audio became part of Avid, i told myself not bad, i have a better chance cuz i've got m-audio soundcards. And then i heard that they are coming up with an update to allow 48 track, still NO GOOD FOR ME.

Then i've reead in some forum that Sampltiude or Sequoia is the way to go for Mixing espcially.

So i gave it a try and since 2 days ago, i went to a buddy of mine who has a studio here in Canada and i told him about m y situation and he told me i'm running Samplitude 8.1 and its just magical and he even told me that Compare to all DAW from Sonar, Cubase Sx, Nuendo to ProToos, the sound Engine of Samplitude is the best in the market. Then he suggested me to go and work on it because he is going a way for a week then i accpet.

Since 2 days i've been on Sam 8.1 and i must admit that this DAW (native) sound amazing and works very well, a lot of ways to assign EFX and more and more. Looks like you are really working on a CONSOLE. But then i've come to the moment that i wanted to start playing around more and i find a little problem: my main problem that i've noticed is (becuase i do work with Nuendo a lot and i love it and espcially for MIDI and composition, i will never change for anything else) so i've noticed the lack of Automation TOOLS. I dont find that you can Automate everything in Samplitude and i think that is the weakness part of Samplitude. Because u know my main DAW is Nuendo and i love it and i could mix on Nuendo but I dont find Nuendo has all the possible features that PTools or samplitude has in the mixing side. (even if i love it and its my main work DAW) So i would love to use samplitude because since two days i'm starting to like it even there is some stuff that i was so use to do with Nuendo in a click that i dont find in Sam and espcially in nuendo or PTools, everything, everything can be "AUTOMATED" not in Samplitude.

And sincelry i find a bit retarded that in 2006 there is still , especially a very well reknown DAw like SAM doesnt have full automation? So of course there is other little things but i'm sure i can live with them but automation, no way, if i'm going after this week to go and buy this wonderfull DAW for my mixing solely, because i wont be using it for anything else, not for now (just liek i wanted to get ProTools just for mixing), i'm not sure that i will be very satisfied to pout down that kind of money in a software that i didnt even see in their website that they are thinking of making Sam fully Automated. Its very important the STAGE of Automation in the MIX. One more thing, its just in version 8.21 that you guyz have been added " Track Folders" etc.... i mean , you know those little things that make your mixing life easier... need ot be in these BIG and Wonderfull DAW ....

Well, so i'd like to know or maybe i didnt do my research fully in Samplitude website, but i really need a confirmation about the automation side because i remember in the song i've been working since 2 days, i've added 1 AUX SEND and i've applied whatever a "Space" effect that i waned to applye in my Snare at a specific moment or time. So if i understood, after i applied my Fx in AUX Send, in the mixer, up, you see " GAin for Aux Send" right?, wich means you can add the amount of that Fx you want in the track right? But me that Gain, i would like to Automate that Aux Send gain.. i dont wanna auotmate the volume of the Aux Send track in the mixer, i would liek to to automate the Gain up in the mixer (when you have your mixer in : Recording Mixer style)

Please someone light me up on this.. because in the kind of music i'm "URbAN music" ( R&B - Hip-Hop etc.. i do in the mix use a lot of Automation and its a MUST for me.. thank you for raking the time, i really appreciate and hopefully i'll get a very promising answer that will drive me to go BUY( after i finish my test in this studio) my version of Samplitude.

Thanx a million in advance

Well, Laakas, it's great that you're deep in the inquiry, and getting a chance to check out Samplitude before buying it is great also, and a rare experience (unless you download the demo of course).

As you may already know ver. 8.3 is due out any day now, and version 9.0 may come out as soon as this Summer.

There is a lot of expectations that Samplitude v9.0 will simply blow everything else away. From my own conversations at NAMM this past January, as well as murmerings on various forums, there is a lot of talk about vastly improved automation, effects routing, side-chaining, etc. etc.

I agree with you that Samp. is the best at mixing, since this is it's primary legacy. Recent improvements in MIDI functionality and expanded surround features is pointing in the direction of Samp. becoming an even more amazing program.

I'm sure expanded automation features will be added in Samplitude (even more than it already is), but it's extremely good engine will always be it's stongest feature.

Have fun,

Greg

Hello Greg!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, i really really appreciate your time. Are you using Samplitude daily? In wich way do you use it? for recording, Mixing or? Exactly, listen up, i todl myself i need totry out this great Audio App. And until now for only 2 days and a half spent on it, i'm really impressed but something little things are bugging me etc.. And here i'm only taking my experience with SAM lately.

as i said, i've been mixing a song, started with all instrument from Drums to Bass and Acst guitars. Everything went very well up to there (only some Fx SEND automation that i've describe in my previous post that i couldnt achieve as i would in Nuendo or ProTools) but anyways i found a way out. But then these little thing happening example: After my instruments track have been mixed, i decided to ADD 4 more track ofr Leads and Adlibs. Then i noticed that i can not add the tracks where i want, when you add them they go dirrectly DOWN, at the end of the Editor window and if I want them up, i have to select them one by one and bring them to the top ( i gues there is a shortuc of selection that i dont know yet). Secondly i find a bit strange that you can just as in Nuendo or any other DAW, place your cursor in between a track an d ask ADD the 4 new track after this one...

Secondly, when i was mixing my music (only isntruments), in my session i've added 4 BUSSES because i do use my output when i mix and then i've added 5 AUX SEND to be able to assigne whatever: DELAY, REVERB etc.. during my mixing with the ionsturments only, i've used 2 AUX SENDS worked well. but yersterday when i added the 2 track of LEAD VOCALS then i decided to open a Reverb in my third AUX SEND to assign to my vocals tracks. And first of all i patch the output of my LEADS to my 7-8 BUS ouput because it will be the volume that control the whole. And then I decided to send the REVERB wich means i'm using my AUX SEND 3 to my two audio Mono track of vocal. And then on top og my two lead track, above in the mixer, i assigne the AUX SEND 3 (reverb) and put a value. Suddenly i noticed soemthing wird.. i wanted lets say to automate the Reverb, lets say i wanted to PAN the reverb to the left.. and inmy surprise, I hear my vocals also being PANED to the LEFT. How come ? I mean my AUXN SEND reverb supposed to be independant from my LEAD TRACKS no? Not to affect my lead track when i decide to PAN my Reverb right? I'm saying that because its really really wird because before adding the Vocal track in tghe mkixing session, I had added in AUX SEND 1 an FX and i've panned with automation the FX and didnt affect the audio to PAN also, only the EFFECT (that is the way its suppose to be right?)

Anyways, very wird things that i'm not catching and as I saif i dont believe i will go to buy this great App next week cuz i was about too but i think i will be waiting for version 8.3 to see what will be the improvement because i went in MAgix site and in version 8.21 they are not talking about much of Automation stuff and its a very must for me in mixing because i'm working with URBAN R&B RAP music, not working with Straight Ballades.. u know in urban we play a lot with Automation in Delays and stuff and can not afford to buy a software that can not give me that right now unless someone from SAM show me a way to get around until they will fix these automation LACK

Anyhow, thank you so much for your time Greg, i really appreciate and so in what kind of music do you always Engineer or produce?

So, until then i will be playing around with SAM a bit but i think i got now choice right now, i will start my MIX back in Nuendo because i know it so well and Tools for automation are wide even i know that since i've tasted SAM, they have so many Tools and superb way and the understanding of MIXING environment but cant afford waisting any minute u know (even playing with it wasnt at all a waist.. never, just learning more and more).

Thanx a million... really appreciated

I'm doing progressive fusion and rock-oriented projects. Some 'electro-metal' or techno-jazz (or whatever they call it).

Samplitude is mainly used for all tracking, mixdown and mastering. I don't use a lot of automation other than basic volume/pan controls, and effects are used basically straight in-line on each channel.

Since not EVERY LITTLE THING is automated in Samp. yet, why not just send your buss to a separate track and record/bounce it to that track and then automate that? I realize this may not be enough, but it's a start.

There's a track-ordering feature somewhere (not at my computer right now) that makes it easier to add-in tracks (and also carry over or copy effects from track to track, etc.)

Otherwise Nuendo may be ok for tracking and then just fly the tracks over to Samp. for final mix and mastering.

You might want ot join the Magix Samplitude forum and download the manual (even though it's out-of-date) and jump in even more!

Hi buddy!

Thank you so much for your time again, really appreicate your suggestions. I will be trying ewaht yo've suggested and i already have the PDF tutorial and i dont find that its well done.. but anyways its a start because i dont feel like going back to Nuendo to finish the mix of like having to mixdown the music i did in SAM in stereo and open it to Nuendo or ProTools to mix the vocals and then back to SAM with all the FX and automation done in the vocals.. it will be just a PAIN in the Ass

Thank you thank you i will try to follow waht u've suggested...

I will keep you posted
