I use FL studio and it doesn't render properly with Emu-x, UVI, or Korg plugins. I am considering getting Cubase to finish out and render my tracks. What would the process be to transfer the sequence across hosts? Where could I read up on this too? I suppose it has to do with export midi file, then finding the right plugins to match up, or is there more to it?

If it's only MIDI tracks, you'll keep the essential stuff (note pitch, note on, note off, MIDI channel, program change, etc.) - that's all I'm afraid. Think of it as the MIDI equivalent of a txt textfile. Fancy host settings, like VST FX, are lost.

OC if you also have audio tracks you'll have to import them manually to the right position.

What you suggested will probably work (I did it once or twice some time ago). Your big hitches are if you're using fruity-specific generators (3xOsc, Soundfont player, and sampler, for example) - because you will have to find replacements for those. You may also have to download VSTI versions of plugins like Wasp, Sytrus, etc if you haven't already.

If you save your current VSTI settings as a preset then when you reload that track you can get back to where you were at there.

I'm not sure how well it will export automation, to be honest - the tracks I exported didn't use it at the time. Perhaps someone with more experience can elaborate on this issue...

Finally, take good notes, or open both sequencers side-by-side to compare things.

MIDI files don't deal in that kind of stuff. All basic MIDI data, even CC's IIRC can be put in a mid file, nothing else. Automation is host dependant.

Depending on the details of your rendering problem, you could also use Silverspike TapeIt, energyXT or Voxengo Recorder to record the audio within FL.

When you transfer the tracks, you should export the midi for each track, save the settings (preset) for each VST instrument and for each VST effect, write down which MIDI should be played when and with which VST, and what the order of the effects is for each track.

Why resort to using those devices when you can just render the tracks out normally. :?

I don't know FL, I responded to the question (the first line) of the original poster. If I misunderstood and missed the point, I apologize. But... in the case of Tracktion there have been cases of people using these plugins to render audio, because of issues with rendering in specific circumstances.

I always use disposable gloves when transferring sequences. And an apron will stop you from getting any on your clothes.

overlooked that possibilty, would I be able to rewire FL to Cubase, use all the fx settings that I have in FL and export through Cubase and have all the settings applied to the exported track?

Been a while since I tried that, you can export thru Cubase, Not sure but I think it keeps the effects setting and all plugs settings on render.
