Impulse response files- how to?

Has anybody here had any experience in making their own impulse responses for use in Waves IR1 or similar?
I heard that using a sine sweep is the most accurate method- where do I get the sine sweep from- can i generate it? Does it have to start and end at any particular frequency?

Some people like to use a short sharp pop sound like that of a starter pistol- again where do You need to set up Mics- facing which way and how many impulses do you need to record for the one room and at what locations?

Be careful shooting off starter pistols in a prison.

haha yeh well its over 150 years old and I don't think there are any ex convicts hiding around there still!

Yes an interesting site but I am not an "altiverb" user and cannot use the program to "generate" the sine waves- and I cannot find further information on recording impulse responses. Anyone have any experience in this?

there is a sine wav inside one of the folders of waves' IR1 and in the manual it said to record this sine wav playing with a mircophone and voila
well i did this on my bedroom. When i used it in the IR1 with a guitar track all I could hear was a high pitch ringing sound blasting my ears.

try Voxengo Deconvolver. it generates a sine wave that you can use to capture an acoustic space, then the program will remove the sound wave from the recording, leaving only the reflections. the limited experience I've had with it has impressed me.
