" Van Halen - Balance Guitar sound"
Hi guys! I'm searching for method of production
how is made his guitar sound in this great album.
And especialy this double L and R effect /impression/ it sounds
like it's double tracked but it's not...
I was reading something about it is a "patch" from Eventide H3000
and that is the most used double tracking guitar trick in the middle 90' era...
I'm asking is there a vst plugin or if anybody knows how can emulate this with native vst's in chain..
I own Voxengo's plugins and hundreds of free plugs.

I have its big brother, the Eventide DSP4000. Do you have a patch name? It's probably in the Gutiar bank that I don't have (They sold a PCMCIA card for hte DSP4000 that had all the H3000 patches), but if you can get a name, I can look.

Google 'artificial double tracking'. Here's how to duplicate that effect in a DAW.
Duplicate the track in your sequencer of choice. Take the original track and pan it 100% left. Take the duplicate track and:
- pan it 100% right
- nudge it forward 20 to 30ms (try more for a more pronounced effect) compared to the original one
- detune it by a few cents (experiment here as well for values that sound good to you) using a 100% wet pitch shifting plugin.
Voilà, EVH

I remember hearing somewhere that he hardpanned the reverb to ones side and the dry sound to the other.

Dry track up the middle, Pitchshift/detune right and left a few cents down (Eddie pitches down on both sides 3~7 cents) delayed 3~9 ms. Could be had with AudioDamge Dischord.
So each side a seperate and different pitch and delay amount.

For this fat sound you can use a pitch shift: set it between 5 and 15 cents detune.
It's not as intrusive as a chorus, but hard-panned (original to left, detuned to right) you can get a very wide sound.

You're kinda all right
take a stereo pitch shift and raise it 5-15 (maybe lower, but not more) cents on one side and drop it the same on the other...then use a stereo delay and add 5-10ms (ten might be too much) on each, if you start hearing a comb filter effect it's too much delay...put very little feedback on it...make a dry copy and push it up the middle (or pan it)...try it delay>shift and shift>delay...both will sound different...don't push either effected part quite as much as the dry....subtlety is the name of the game...done right less will be more...

dimitar, thanks for your question. I don't know his album, but I can imagine what sound comes out of that set-up. I'm gonna try that out, first thing tomorrow !!! (well, you know, after... )

Sounds pretty neat... reminds me of EVH, though I don't know "Balance" in order to compare, reason being that Balance is regarded as one of their worst albums of all time, being only slightly better than Diver Down but not as bad as Van Halen III-- hence, the only song I know is "Can't Stop Loving You" which is a pretty likeable straight-ahead rocker.

EVH even uses this sort of setup live: 3 quad box cabs, Centre dry, R and L [FX (+ Dry)].
Normally you would go for symmetry with any detune FX: one up, the other down. If two are down you will hear the sound as being flat.
When it comes to comb filtering it is there with any delay and becomes more drastic the shorter the delay time - ie flangers typically have something of the order of a msec delay.
