Live in Vain

From Cordwainer Smith's "Scanners Live in Vain"...
Martel was angry. He did not even adjust his blood away from anger. He stamped across the room by judgment, not by sight. When he saw the table hit the floor, and could tell by the expression on Luci's face that the table must have made a loud crash, he looked down to see if his leg were broken. It was not. Scanner to the core, he had to scan himself. The action was reflex and automatic. The inventory included his legs, abdomen, Chestbox of instruments, hands, arms, face, and back with the mirror. Only then did Martel go back to being angry. He talked with his voice, even though he knew that his wife hated its blare and preferred to have him write.

"I tell you, I must cranch. I have to cranch. It's my worry, isn't it?"
Okay, creative but not such a great name. How's about Cordwainer then?

Post

Cranch would be an awesome name very suitable to the instrument..

I love Cordwainer Smith's work!

Cranch -- I like. BTW, did you get my mention in another thread (re: all reet) of a robot story you might like? Check out "Tik-Tok" by John Sladek if you've not done.

Pretty sure I've read that one. I had ALL the old Sci-Fi stuff, mostly first edition copies my grandmother gave me from several book club memberships way back when.

It's not very old, 1980s I think. I got it at the county library. Tik-Tok was a good little robot who liked a little paint to cover up the walls, and IIRC he had an interesting career after that.

Amoebe, would you please design *all* future VSTis coming up?
Really, your design work is exceptional in my eyes. Pleasing, not agressive, pretty functional from the looks, yet pretty.

Hey - don't give amoebe any ideas - I still need a GUI or two before fame and fortune totally consume our resident genius/artist.

Amoebe I totally agree anything you do for skins Rox!!!!

Hello everyone! I have now uploaded a new version of Scanned Synth VST (0.8.3.8 ) with the parameters re-ordered. Obviously any songs you've created with previous versions wil not work with this one (or at least they will sound really crazy!). Now I need to decide whether to bugfix first or start adding GUI code.

Hmm, the new one doesn't seem to change much when I flip randomize (I think it might be leaving some knobs out).

The next thing I'm going to do is change it so that future parameter changes will not invalidate existing songs.

I have some bad news: My PC died yesterday. Scanned Synth's (or whatever it's name is going to be) GUI was doing fine but now I can't continue for a couple of days
If it happens to be a harddisk crash its really bad news because I hadn't made a backup yet. But I think it's the motherboard. Might be time for dualcore.
I try to get it fixed asap of course but I don't know how long it will take. In the meantime it'll be twiddeling thumbs on the couch with the wife. I hope my marriage will survive :hihi:

D'OH!!! Bad news indeed. Best wishes for an easy recovery.

Guess it's bug fixing time.

:hihi:

Good Luck, amoebe! I had the same problem 3 months ago, I'm a dual core bad-ass now.

I figure the bugs are exterminated as well.
I'm a dual core bad-ass now.
I was hoping I could postpone that route for another 6 months. Now I'm going to have to start researching on motherboards/processors/memory.
