Yes, there are actually several options.
But how much audio do you want to capture at any given time, and what kind of capture/playback system did you have in mind (looper, slicer, random glitch/stutter, etc)?

Sample and hold isn't an effect. It is a modulator.

Actually, S&H can be implemented as zero order interpolation. Some effects called "decimators" offer this effect - it lowers the sample rate and introduces distortion and aliasing when used on audio signals (at audio rate).
@jupiter8: Whether or not you call a process a "modulator" depends on its usage (ie. routing), not on the kind of processing that it does.

I was planning on using it as an effect for glitchy sounds. I'm sure it would sound a lot like bit crushing, but since the hold time is fixed, it might have a ceratin "symmetry" to it (maybe not, I've never tried it
), as it's not dependant of the frequency and amplitude of the incoming signal.
I'd like something where I could specify the hold time (obviously one short enough to generate harmonics) and then have that applied to an incoming audio signal. Might that be sonically interesting?

That's essentially a quantizer that you've described. Any bitcrusher/decimator would do for that.3*s wrote:I'd like something where I could specify the hold time (obviously one short enough to generate harmonics) and then have that applied to an incoming audio signal.
Digital doesn't require the same limitations as sample&hold circuits, so really anything that captures audio and replays it could be considered a sample and hold process.
But if you want an effect like a sample and hold circuit (that captures only one signal value and outputs that value until retriggered), you've already got it in quantizing.
Try the quantizer module in Synthedit if you want to add anything to it.

If i'm not mistaken (has been before, see above3*s wrote:Ahh, I see. What I'm describing is basically raw resampling.

Sick Puppy, part of the Psycho Toolkit bundle, analyses the waveform, and holds the value at each "significant feature" until it detects the next one. This means each "hold" is for a different duration, rather than fixed time. "Significant feature" usually means a peak or trough within a single cycle.3*s wrote:I was planning on using it as an effect for glitchy sounds.
It's one of the few effects where looking at the waveform makes it easier to understand what's going on.

find a plugin called 'spectral monkeyage' and automate the 'freeze' parameter on a vowel or note or drum hit. sounds quite cool and is what i imagine your idea sounds like.

GRM Tools Freeze is the best I've used and heard for this sort of thing.

S&H is a modulator, but it is commonly misenterpreted as sample and loop, or sample and stutter. Are there any real sample-and-hold audio-in, cc out midi VST effects? I would love to get my hands on one.
