Just noticed this post and as the author of Cantabile I feel obliged to reply.
When check for updates is enabled, all Cantabile does is a simple version check by occasionally downloading a text file whose name is based on the current build number. If the file contains a URL it launches a web browser with that URL.
It was never the intent to appear sinister, deceptive or invasive - I just wanted a simple way to notify users of updates as quickly as possible, particularly during the beta period where I perceived the need for quick notifications of potentially serious problems.
The other reason for this approach is I figured most users would prefer an anonymous way of getting update notifications ie: without having to register with an email address.
Apologies if you were concerned about what Cantabile was up to. It certainly doesn't upload any information from your PC.
The next version (v1.1) has already been updated prompt whether to enable this feature on its first run.
