Well, it wasn't that high quality to start with, 8 bit mono at 10kHz on the I and 16kHz on the II.Any idea where I could get a really high quality version of this kind of sound?

"Classic Samplers from Synth Solstice Now available as a download. Get the sounds of the Fairlight, Emulator 2 and more. $10 "
...just ask, if this sound is among these samples. Besides that I'm pretty sure that this sound can be found in the Zero-G Nostalgia Library...

As others have posted, the Greg Holmes site has a "lo-fi" wav of the Fairlight CMI IIx Orch 5 stab. Most other synths that followed have got something similar in there repetoire. You can get an accurate representation of it in Zero-G's "Nostalgia" VSTi, with a host of other classic Fairlight CMI IIx sounds and bucket loads of other vintage synths. All these sounds come from the Hollow Sun library.
Variations (Orch 2 & Trevor Horn's reworking) can also be found in the Cult Sampler VSTi and there is also a ProSamples version of Cult Sampler available through Best Service which works in multiple formats.
Finally, there is a sample CD being sold on the internet with Fairlight CMI IIx samples on but it's legality has been brought into question. I had a conversation with a former Fairlight employee who claimed he could prove that Vogel and Ryrie (the Fairlight founders) had signed over the licence to the CMI IIx library to him giving him total usage control. Last I heard he was taking legal steps, but that CD is still around. Given that Cult Sampler and Nostalgia are selling well, and that Fairlight no longer produce the CMI, or any other musical intrument for that matter (they now do video and audio editing hardware for film and broadcast) I doubt they really give a stuff. Thankfully, they were never a big corporate, willing to sue anyone for looking at them the wrong way !
I have acces to the entire Fairlight CMI IIx library and have sat on it for some time, never too sure how best to use it, and have now decided it can see some use in the new project I am working on. Watch this space
But if all you want is that Orch stab that graced every record in the the early to mid eighties, then there are hundreds of synths that can do it and if you want the Fairlight grunginess, just use a decimator or appropriate EQ
And to think, a CMI IIX cost £25,000 back in the day, and now your average laptop built in soundcard is infinitely more powerful !! But you cannot under estimate the impact and influence the Fairlight had on the music industry. I could write a book on it, and one day I just might
Can you tell I'm a Fairlight fan ???
