It's far from free, but I really like the "tape saturation" algo on Izotope Trash 1.7. I'm starting to keep it parked in my master bus.
Here is my small version:

You can buy a tapedeck secondhand for no money.
If you go that way, try to find a real tape unit

Try TLs Saturated Driver. It's free and in some cases I use it to replace Vintage Warmer.

yes,he is good.
now,any hiss tips?
and EQ settings for cassette?

Post

hiss you can do that with a white noise generator! just set the noise floor to -70db or to taste. as far as the cassette goes make your on or down load the found impulses from noisevault theres three tape deck impulses from a sony cassette deck. the found impulses are not on the impulse list at noisevault you have to go searching. there is another cassette impulse but cant remember were its at

What I've got here is authentic Studer B67 hiss.

Yea, it's totally useless, but there ya have it. :hihi: Hats off to anyone who finds this useful.

I suppose I should also post an example of the type of saturation the unit produces, but all that would achieve is make all the people who love the current crop of tape plugins (ie. waveshapers) cry.

Thanks for that link.

As for using these, I would just insert them into SIR, right?

What is the author talking about in this notes, mentioning the Waves Renassaince compressor? I mean, you can't insert an impulse into that compressor, right? I take it to mean that he is suggesting using it along with these impulses, properly inserted in something like SIR....

yummy hiss,thanks kingston! :)
(though i fear it may be a bit too 'high quality' hiss for my tastes.)

:hihi:
