someone choose me a modular host

sorry, dumb thread...

i tend to work more 'modularly' nowadays, creating sounds with various tools then piecing things together in tracktion.

but indecisive me finds myself dabbling with lots of hosts but not really learning any of them properly. I find none of them seem to do everything and... different perspectives needed...

eXT is neat but maybe too midi for me, not low level enough.

bidule is great but lacks automation(?) and could do with a few knobs or something on the gui.

synthmaker isn't a host yet...

audiomulch lacks the low level stuff too (great otherwise)

tracktions rack filters are cool though no built in modules, need Konstrux or something for low level stuff...

Synthedit is, surprisingly to me, about the best fit at the moment though no automation or anything...

I dunno, someone tel me what to do, i have no will of my own... :)

I don't know really, NO host does EVERYTHING. That's just something you have to live with.. I think these are your keywords: '..dabbling with lots of hosts but not really learning any of them properly'.. I'm willing to bet my imaginary son's lunchmoney that every single producer out there who actually gets stuff released, know his/her stuff inside out. Nothing ever came out of dabbling, except maybe failure and frustration.. Learning a host properly? That's 2-4 years of your life, no kidding. Get the app from the above list that you're the least unhappy with and get to work..

hi gary what do you mean with low level?

what do you miss in the hosts?

can you explain that a bit more?
sound is vibration, vibration is life

Sounds like you should look at pd (free - lacks some stuff) or MAX/MSP (expensive - good documentation, vst integration etc.)

maybe Buzz??

maybe posting first thing in the morning is as bad as posting drunk... ;)

Ok, by low level I mean having the tools to do really advanced/crazy things; not just having an arp or chord plug or a nifty sampler like eXT but maths operators, audio buffers... the things you use to actually build the tools you use.

Ignore this thread if you wish, I'm really thinking out loud. :)

sir, yes sir!

nah, that's good advice, cheers.

@respirator: PD? looks scary :) maybe I need to bite the bullet and use something like this though.

@G-Ro124: Buzz? It's a tracker! :D I'll give it another look to be fair.

Thanks for all the input.

I think you should try PD or maybe SynthEdit or Reaktor?

GaryG, you might want to wait for Phrazor formely known as Tequila. It may be what you are looking for. Just maybe. A very interesting new host. Can plug into any existing host as well.

Released April/May 2006

Phrazor sounds good, even better than Tequila... and that sounded better than ERA 3 :)

You have the parameter mapper where you can assign incoming CC messages to parameters or other CC inside bidule.
Works quasi like automation but depends surely on your host if that's enough.

How are you wanting to automate Synthedit? Sending cc messages from another host to SE can be done quite simply by using MidiYoke to connect the two programs. Once thats set up, find the "controllers" module on the Insert>Midi menu in Synthedit and connect it to a "midi in" module. You can use this module to set up the destinations for the cc messages, for more messages add more "controllers" modules. :)

A lot of them either load as VSTs or can produce VSTs, so using a couple in tandem might work nicely - Using EXT loaded as a sequencer and sound source in Synthedit or producing a setup you like in Synthedit and then exporting it to a VST and loading it in EXT to control it, for instance...

The KarmaFX synth is a free modular synth VST that might find its way into your toolkit too.
It's a rave, Lewis!

:hihi:

It does look good on paper though so far.

Do what I do, run Bidule and energyXT inside Audiomulch. They work well together and fill in what each host leaves out.
