what up folks, does Sonar have the specific feature of slicing up an audio file and then allowing you to sequence the slices by triggering them with a midi controller right in the track?

i know you can use the cyclone or the new rex thingy or whatever but i want to do it just as described above.

thanks in advance for your tips and if anybody is using Sonar exclusively for sample editing and production i love to hear about it.

Hi stale,

You can use the Loop Constructor view to manipulate slice markers, but the slices can only be accessed individually by using something like Cyclone.

A great alternative to Cyclone is LiveLab's LiveSlice. If you're working with sliced loops this is a great plug to have. Much more fun that Cyclone.

No.

Sonar's audio tracks are linear audio tracks. Use something else. In fact thats what Project5 is for...

You could pull something like this off with a REX file and the new REX player in SONAR, which lets you play each slice based on MIDI note...but there isn't anything in SONAR itself to create the REX files to do it with.

I've done this using ReCycle to create the REX files, and then open it in SONAR's REX player instrument, after which you can "play' the slices the way you've described, and it works great. :) But again: you'd need an external application like ReCycle to create the REX file in the first place.

yeah i'm trying to minimize the steps in my workflow, whyterabbyt does project 5 allow you to 'slice' and then trigger/sequence without moving those slices to somewhere else, and does it allow you to do this to mp3's?

A second vote here for LiveSlice. Just load it into Sonar as a softsynth, load in a wav file, and your sound file is automatically sliced and mapped onto MIDI notes. And thats just the beginning... :D

P5 doesnt have the typical 'beatslicer' type tools, although you can use splitting and slip editing. It still sounds like you're better off with a dedicated beatslicer.

No idea about MP3's., TBH. Never bothered trying.

yeah i didn't think so, theres alot to be said for typical beatslicing tools, Live 5 is my main workspace but i hate splitting audio in it,i just want to slice and go,
