I know that Squids is a Steely Dan fan, so I am taking the liberty of asking you all here if you have heard the new release from the better half of the SD team: Donald Fagen. I have been listening to it over the past few days and loving the tunes, the sound and not least the lyrics.
Cheers,
Gordon

Oooh! New Donald Fagen! Must get! I loved the last album. That got round-the-clock play in '94.

i've always been a fan of both his solo work & steely dan, but i when i was listening to the mp3's on his website, i couldn't help but think : that same, same sound all over again... the rhodes, the muted guitar riffs, the harmonies,...
wouldn't it be great if someone could get him out of his "comfort zone" and lock him up in a studio with someone like brian eno (fill in someone else if you want, the crazier the better)
just a thought...

I agree; but maybe it's a good thing that he (or they) don't deviate so much; maybe he's no good at anything else.filterdude wrote:i've always been a fan of both his solo work & steely dan, but i when i was listening to the mp3's on his website, i couldn't help but think : that same, same sound all over again... the rhodes, the muted guitar riffs, the harmonies,...

Sort of like Ellington meets Coltrane..... Which they did.wouldn't it be great if someone could get him out of his "comfort zone" and lock him up in a studio with someone like brian eno (fill in someone else if you want, the crazier the better)
just a thought...
I've read that Fagen does not like synths too much so I doubt it will ever happen.

Thanks for the heads up. I just checked out some audio clips and it sounds great. Have to get it this weekend.

I just listened to "Confide In Me". Great Fagen-song, maybe a little forgotten... Manhattan Transfer recorded it back in '91. I think Fagen's own recording is better.

Does anyone (I am sure Squids does) know what keyboard sounds are used "What I do"? Esp the organ/FX that I really like but have no idea how to reproduce in SS2.
Thanks,
Gordon

Can't wait to see the tour. Of course I have album already. It's good! The more jazzy he gets the happier I am. I am not into the basic blues "safe" stuff of the last SD or Kamakiriad. Sort of "samey" when you compare to say... oh, I don't know... Aja!!!! Gaucho! Even the Nightfly just has such melody and chord changes that are so amazing. I don't know yet how Morph sits with those but I need to listen to it more and see. Either way I am always happy to see new material (and tours) coming from these cats.
As you know, it is also a goal to have every Steely Dan musician (or as many as we can) in the Studio ProFile series. So far we have Steve Gadd and Ed Greene (we even had Ed come into the studio and record a bunch of SD grooves he didn't even play on which will be released soon). But, we're talking to Elliot Randall (guitarist on Reeling in the Years and other older stuff... he's a friend of one of the people we worked with on Danny and Jerry's titles) and an engineer we're working with is good pals with Jim Keltner... slowly but surely we'll get most of them! Too bad Pocaro isn't around anymore though. He was really great. Oh yeah, we have a session with Ricky Lawson coming up as well. I'd love to get Erskine and Chambers (the new Dan drummers) too. Of course, it is just an homage to a band that exemplifies top session playing, a good mix of jazz, funk and rock as well as tasteful dry/honest production styles. Ironically, the elements of that are very cross-genre friendly as well. But, with SR there's always some secrets for SD fans, Genesis fans, Floyd or Beatles fans... mainly because I happen to be one myself!

Hey Dave! Can you tell that weird organ sound on "What I do" is? I am sure I came across it in SS2 at one time but of course I can't find it now.
