Looks like Vember Audio Surge but not as powerful.
Wonder if the character is unique and pleasent.

It's hard for commercial products these times. To spend 199 bucks or take some of the latest powerful and excellent sounding free synths like oatmeal, Rez20, Mainliner and so on... May some synths sound as good as hell - the freebies do so, too.

I think Zebra 2 really gets you your $169 (preorder)worth and way the freak beyond...

I owned a mQ for four years, and I've anxiously awaited this. OK, a quick play with the demo, and...

On first play... yeah, they got it right

CPU usage isn't that horrible; about 35 % on big wavetable with FM pads using both effects slots and comb filters in the filter slots, and about 3-4 % for mono bass synths. That's on a 3500+.

I can definitely see getting this...

I figured they would get it right seeing as how I believe the same programmer worked on it.

The price isn't that much less than what I paid for my hardware uQ though... still, I guess it's consistent with some of the other softsynths one sees.

Kubik is a great synth and I love it... but I have to say in all honesty that it doesn't compare in overall sound quality to my microwave. Kubik is its own thing and still has (imo) an additive/digital color to it.

I'm glad to see they kept some of the more "amusing" quirks in

For example, the sync switch on Oscillator 3. Now, someone who's never had a mQ/Q would assume that 3 would be the synced oscillator. Wrong- it's 2. 3's the master and tells 2 when to reset- just like the original.

For completely faithful replication run your host at 48k or multiples thereof; the mQ's sample rate was 48k.

Somehow my initial performance issue has resolved itself on the laptop - no more 100% CPU when loaded into eXT.

Can't figure out what fixed it though, perhaps it was the reboot

Beautiful sound

and a huge lot of modulation possibilities and parameters. I love the easy edit with knobs you can assign to most of them simultaneously. The arpeggiator is perfect and everything is pretty easy to understand. The midi learn works fine and the huge layout is well handled with the smaller easy edit page.
My only gripe would be the prests, they simply do not show what this beast can do and too "trancy" or either too "standard" for my taste.
CPU is fine here, most of the presets around 6 to 15 % of my Pentium M, with one exception reaching something like 40%

I'm very tempted to buy this...

Regarding lack of presets...

This synth is supposed to be able to handle uQ patches. Don't know whether it would work for the demo version... but I wonder if you could grab some uQ presets somewhere (for example off the Waldorf soundcorner archives) and try them out. There should be lots of great patches for the uQ out there.
