Seems despite Dual Opterons and such there is still demand for specialized DSP boxes.

Teaser for those who are to lazy to read the whole article :D

Comprising a 19" rack-mountable hardware unit and software plug-ins, the Duende hardware incorporates the latest generation Sharc DSPs and a 400 Mbit FireWire interface. Integrating with a range of DAWs via VST, AU and RTAS, the hardware allows up to 32 channels of 96kHz audio processing per unit. Two units can be daisy-chained for up to 64 channels of processing.

Looks good. Can't wait till we hear what Uad-1 has up their sleeves.

But this is a smart move for SSL. I say these DSP boxes act more like dongles than anything else. Im guessing you could run these natively, but the piracy would be crazy. So given the power to run 32 channels, thats good enough for the unit.

Nice! At first, I thought they were announcing a host built around an SSL engine...now that would be cool! Wonder how much $$$...

Yes, very interesting stuff, but could be quite pricey for most folks.

The Macintosh version of Duende is estimated to ship during April, with a PC version expected during Qu. 3 / 2006. Recommended retail pricing in Germany will be about 1.600,- Euro.

Hmmmm.....1600 euro is about $2000US at current exchange rates :(

Fwoop!! :-o Yeah, that's not a real shocker. Actually, I thought it might've been more...but that will definitely keep it in the pro-ish territory.

Indeed. It's not a bad price at all, for such a big name company, rack mount, etc.

Well considering that the Waves TDM version is $1500, and you still have to worry about WUP. $2000 doesn't seem that bad. Plus you can use it on many different formats. I wonder how it will vary from the waves version.

Question: It states, "32 channels of 96kHz audio processing per unit", so does that mean it would double at 48khz? Just wondering.

What I heard was an interesting idea was using video cards for sound processeing. The thing that would be real cool though is somine to use that new cell processor found in the sony playstation 3, I heard it has some awsome power for number crunching.

Good points! I wonder what the processing is like at 44/48? 64 SSL effects....
