Electronic drum samples for B2 +Snare q -Advice needed!

I will buy Battery 2 when the next long awaited update is released.

I need some good sounding electronic bass drum and snare drum sounds. I know about Synthetic Drums 2 but I'd like to learn making my own sounds. Still I think I need some source matereial to make my own snares for example.

I've been listening to the new Boards of Canada album Headphase Campfire and they have some very nice sounding snares.

1. How are they made?

Are they made of acoustic snare drums? Or layering different snares/sounds?

2. Are there other collections of samples that you can recommend? Is it worth registering on a sample site?
