Something I don't understand here ?

Hi Peter -

Apologies for cross posting on this...

I have been cought up with college projects over the last weeks and have not been keeping an eye on the situation as I would have liked...

I believe the sponcer idea may have worked - If I may offer an opinion...

I (as a student) would be willing to pay an annual subscription say 50-70euro as thats all I could afford ATM... not so much to have exclusive access as such but as a 'friend of the auditorium' kind of way

I dunno - I hate to see you under stress and would like to help!

That's just what I thought as well.
Personally, I rarely used the Auditorium in a freeloader kinda way, I usually just got some samples and converted them to other formats - which I thought was a more or less reasonable way to contribute, but as said, I'd also be willing to pay an amount of money to keep that thing going, simply because I know how difficult it might be for beginners to get started with a reasonable set of samples.
Call it a " mission for good karma" or whatever...

As a beginner I have to say that this is very kind of you. I have learned lots from your (and others') posts here. And yes, this is my first post on kvr.

You know, everybody has once been a beginner.
And personally, I will never be able to even pay back for half of the help, tips and also free stuff (such as plugins and samples) I received at places such as this.
That's why I kinda feel "in charge" or so.

Hi Sascha!

I feel very much the same... Im (finally) getting close to producing the musical ideas Ive had running round in my head for the last ten years... I believe KvR and some of the other sites have given me SO much help and information - I would like to help out...

I was kicking this around in my head - perhaps we should chat about this by PM - but here is what I was thinking...

I mirror some VSTs for a GREAT dev - dover666 - his site runs outta bandwidth sometimes around 2 weeks into each month...
PERHAPS we could band together for one of Spe3ds excellent hosting packages (say one with high monthly bandwidth) - ask him to move the files there and let it run as a first come service - of course it will eventually use up its allocation each month - but it will be re-set the first week of the next???

Perhaps this is a bad idea - or a nightmare to admin - I dont know... your thoughts???

Maybe a good idea, Dave.
Give me a few days to think about it and get back home (this internet connection will time out soon and I'll be travelling the next 3 days).

Guess hosting things such as the Maestro Grand or whatever could be quite an adventure though (and that's why I perfectly understand Spe3D).

Hi! Thank you for your thoughts here guys,

I am working on a solution -as the problem is bigger than just the large files sizes - it's the whole structure and set-up - auditorium section too- the solution will involve everything.

No one should think of placing large files of the size and popularity as an open download on a server - it would take it out in a matter of hours.

My packages are not for that kind of set-up, anyone placing massive files for mass download open to the net would be shut-off, due to the mega loads it would create, probably before the bandwidth (in a per month sense) was used.
- to host big big popular files requires management - you would need to have your own dedicated servers for that kind of open link.

I would not want to have a file like that open on the net on one of my packages.

Thank you, I am creating a solution, that is a mixture of things,

Best regards,

Peter

Thanks Peter...

I understand completely!

As I mentioned it was a thought - Ive been out of the hosting game for the last three years... so of course anything like that would be guided by you!
Just do keep in mind there are folks that support you and would like to help if possible!!!

All the best!!!

Ok, an idea could be to only offer files for a limited amount of time (a very limited amount that is). Something like a "download of the week" or so.
After that, if people still wanted to get things, there could be torrents for the files. Of course, people would have to help in seeding. But this has been working quite well for some stuff allready.
The initial torrent files (which are small) could still be hosted. If someone found a file he/she wanted, he/she has to ask for people to (re-)start seeding. Which would at least force them into some sort of communication/interaction, something so sorely lacking most of the times.

Just recently, bleebsen (kvr nick) posted his comprehensive library of 480L impulses in torrent format, and apparently everybody wanting it has been sorted out just fine.
It has also been uploaded to fileshare or so.

These could be ideas to keep the server load down.
"Didn't manage to get the file during 48 hours?" - "OK, here's the torrent, ask some people politely to help you out, you need <link to torrent client> to get yourself sorted".

Another interesting idea for sure!!!

As I was indeed one of those folks who got the 480L files by torrent

Im interested in what Peter mentioned above as he seems to be working on something

Interesting thoughts!!!

Yes artists can use torrent

All you need for a torrent is the original authors permission.

I certainly wont be seeding other guys work over a torrent - ever. Just to be clear there.

Right now - big massive files that just drain resources without any kind of revenue to back them up, interest wise 3%

For me its about maintaining the overall philosophy and functionality of the 'whole' auditorium where the most benefit, the open to all music sections etc - with possible extra features, better management of how much space guys can use for free for songs and how much space they use before they need to pay anything etc (big files or not) interest wise 100%

Best regards,

Peter

perhaps 'some' of us should be advised to weed out files on an irregular basis (such as I've done without any prompting one time or another)
Yes I use your space for storage, but I could easily be convinced not to do so.

In fact, now that I've finally finished my taxes (grumble grumble) I could start weeding out old files this week!
