Also I can think of other reasons for not connecting a DAW to the internet. I would ideally not do this, as I would be able to have a cleaner and faster running system, rather than having firewall, anti-virus, and various behind the scenes stuff running and taking up resources. Its a pain to have to run End-it-all to stop all this crap when you want to do music. Ideally I'd have a pc for internet and a permanently offline DAW. And don't get me started on plugins that try to connect to the internet........

Pfffffffft what a joke, glad I've not got anything that involves connecting to the internet.

Why don't you just connect the DAW for the five minutes it takes to get it done? I mean whining about it will last forever, getting it authorized will take five minutes and then you can use samplitude as long as you want without connecting again, no?

Hmmm All of my DAW's have been connected to the net for years without stability issues. That's what hardware firewalls and careful internet usage is for.susiwong wrote:None of the audio people I know, pros or amateurs, can afford to have an internet connection on their DAW, they have to rely on their machines.

So, before connecting, you'd need to DL and install the Service Packs and critical patches.
I don't even want SP2 on my DAW.

I treat my DAW as a dedicated recording machine, not as a computer per se. Connecting your DAW to the web is like leaving your mixing console in the rain.arke wrote: WHY!? WHY WHY WHY WHY DO YOU DUMBASS PEOPLE NOT CONNECT YOUR DAWS TO THE NET!?
Call me a dumbass if you want, but I sleep well at night and my recording machine cruises at top speed when not bogged down by overly-aggressive anti-viral programs or frequently pinged by scavengers.

that is so wrong. I was thinking about switching to Samp, but this has changed my mind.susiwong wrote:OK, it's official.
Samplitude 8 SE needs an internet connection on the computer on which it is to be installed.

arke, IMO you're asking for trouble. firewall and AV are essentials.arke wrote:Well, I don't run a firewall, I don't run Anti virus, and I'm not having any trouble even though my computer is connected to the net 24 hours a day.

Unless he means he doesn't run a "software" firewall (which i don't.) but going on the net without an AV, that's just stupid...no matter how clever you think you are and how much you know, you don't get forewarned (unless you have an AV that iscptgone wrote:arke, IMO you're asking for trouble. firewall and AV are essentials.arke wrote:Well, I don't run a firewall, I don't run Anti virus, and I'm not having any trouble even though my computer is connected to the net 24 hours a day.

It seems you don't much understand the nature of viruses, the ease of deployment and their creators.
you might remember the thread in OT from a while back ... I downloaded AVG and checked my computer and it found nothing.

A hardware firewall is far superior to any of the old "zone alarm" etc shite, so that's good.arke wrote:i am running a hardware firewall, but no AV.Reverse Engineer wrote:Unless he means he doesn't run a "software" firewall (which i don't.) but going on the net without an AV, that's just stupid...no matter how clever you think you are and how much you know, you don't get forewarned (unless you have an AV that iscptgone wrote:arke, IMO you're asking for trouble. firewall and AV are essentials.arke wrote:Well, I don't run a firewall, I don't run Anti virus, and I'm not having any trouble even though my computer is connected to the net 24 hours a day.) that something malicious is being downloaded to your comp. you might remember the thread in OT from a while back ... I downloaded AVG and checked my computer and it found nothing. But as far as AV software is concerned, prevention is better than a cure, and like you said, you installed avg, you must have seen it uses hardly any resources and is the least intrusive AV i have ever came across, so why not carry on running it and lessen the potential risks of getting a virus?
If I did ever need an AV though I'd use AVG though - free, and as you said, its not as bloated as the other crap. But I don't see myself needing one anytime soon.
(and yes, I've had my share of viruses before, but the last one was about 2 years ago through AIM, which I don't use anymore)..
which reminds me - don't use AIM either.

Don't say viruses. If you follow a few SIMPLE guidelines you'll never have to worry about those. Its just absolutely 100% stupid.
(2) don't use outlook express, use webmail instead, and if you can't, outlook or thunderbird
(3) tell it to automatically update (assuming its windows xp)
(4) don't use kazaa or something
(5) ...common sense.
- you basically just need a good relaible firewall... (e.g. Sygate)

Holy moly, it is a damn promotion for their new product. Are you people bent? Whining and crying like little school girls. Some of you don't deserve to use a great program like samplitude.
