Thanks! It is a very easy technique actually. There are two mics under the table - at each side. The mics are of the cheapest type - like $6 each. They are in contact with the table by duct tape. This makes them function like semi-contact mics. They are heavily isolated with a lot of tape which helps to reduce ambient noise and sound (like speech) - we only want the sound and vibrations from the table.

The sound goes into my laptop. First of all, all frequencies below 8khz totally cuts off by a hi-pass filter to further minimize irrelevant sounds. The sound of a ping-pong ball is rich and distinct in the freq hi-range, so that is the information we want.

The signal is then fed into KTDrumTrigger (Koen Tanghe@Smartelectronix). KTDrumTrigger makes a wonderful job transforming the trigger signal into midi. The midi signal get into Live's randomizer and a scale corrector and then to Simpler and, as can be heard once in the movie, Impulse (drums).

The thing that took the most time in this project was the construction of the table. We did it totally from scratch. The size had to be optimized so you could play reasonably fast. The net was shortened and painted. The overall color was choosed to make it into more than just a retail table. And the branding ("Young Urban Pro / Biff Boff") at the side was a must to have!

duncanparsons wrote:OOI, is there anyway to actually store any of this footage? I has ADSL at work, but only dialup at home, and would love to be able to see it when not broadcasting to the whole office (I'm dead centre in an open plan office!).

I mean, I can't really take 20+ minutes to watch the complete 1973 'Suppers Ready' footage in the middle of a working day, and 56k just won't do it smoooothly!

Any ideas?

use http://keepvid.com - generates download links for YouTube, Google Video, and a bunch of other streaming sites.

After that you'll just need an .flv player - there's a variety of freeware players out there.

excellent....it's hard to find some stuff, like you put in "can" and you get a thousand home movies of beer swilling... and now to search for faust....wish me luck....

here's this as well..."mushroomhead", might be a fan vid though

It is a fan vid - no vintage Faust clips up there... already looked.
