To clarify this again: Samplitude professional and Samplitude classic can be registered offline, only Samplitude SE needs an online-connection.

I hope you're still gonna make a banner and join us on our protest march nonetheless? :hihi:

Okay, i will make a banner against the dongle of Samplitude professional, i really hate it. I hoped that a can use Samplitude SE as my on the road version, but it has the limitation, that you can't define your own shortcuts, and i work a lot with (own defined) keyboard shortcuts  Maybe i should make two banner, the second against the keyboard shortcut limitation, i really think that's a big scandal

Scandal? No.

Annoyance to some? Yes.

Worth the bother and fuss? Not for me. I'm happy with my host. :D :P

My DAW? I have dialup and run ZoneAlarm when I get online. Viruses? None. Malware? None. Well, I consider Windows malware but my PowerBook is too weak to use as a DAW.. lol! :hihi:

If I'm not the only person saying it, do my words have a bit more meaning?
Actually, that is only true if the router is doing NAT (= Network Address Translations). The fact is that there are companies that 'sell' the idea that a common router is as good as a firewall, which is certainly not the case. Even a NAT-router is in itself not the equivalent to a good firewall. A real firewall does a lot more (things like packet inspection, intrusion detection and such).

One other thing, 'hardware' firewalls are actually also software and therefor subject to security holes and exploits. That's why I have a full linux iptables based firewall in front of my wifi-router :D

Know nothing about linux really by the way, just read a few bits & bobs on various distros that are good for that specific purpose.
I wouldn't really bother, but our lass & my daughter are a little less savvy than me.
If you have an old machine that you can dedicate to this (like I did) then just grab a copy of IPcop (www.ipcop.org) or smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org) and you're there :D

I'm running a IPcop box at home (used to be a smoothwall box) and a smoothwall box at my office. Both install straight from one small ISO-download and are up and running in about 30 minutes without any specific Linux knowledge :D

One of the funniest threads lately... :hihi:. I'm, too, connected to the internet 24/7 for 5 years now. No problems, everything still running smoothly and still using the same Win2K I installed 5 years ago. No AV, only hardware firewall and a lot of common sense :hihi:. I can't understand this hype about DAW's not connecting to internet, it's utter BS IMHO, though for some people [not very knowledgable about computers], the fear of losing the data just by connecting to the internet is quite understandable, I must admit. However, to me, it looks just like plain paranoia. I know more than a few of such creatures, because I'm the one who've assembled those "DAW" computers for them. To me, it's like driving a car: when you don't know how to do it - you drive carefully, and when you know how to do it - you drive like you should drive normally [or like a madman - depends upon your taste]. I like driving my computer and my car both like a madman... :hihi:

Life would be a bore, if not living it on the edge, wouldn't you agree?

Wow, coming back late to the party. This thread has generated quite some heat , he?
Anyway, I only decided to test Sam 8 SE to see what it's all about. I'm running my recording environment of choice since a while, so I don't get excited about it. ;)
But as everything is worth a look (if you can freely test it), I've just thought to give it a try.
If it can't be installed on my DAW partition, without connecting to the net, I don't mind. I happen to not run any unused stuff/crap on my music partition, but this is more for performance reasons then for security (which is a nice side effect nontheless). However. I haven't had enough time to really try it, just some quick lookarounds, and even though it has some really nice features, it works quite different from my usual host (LIVE 5 - & SX 3 in my friends house). So I don't think it'll change anything re: my preference.

Enjoy (or not  ) this cool little freebie

Regards
Raphael ;)
