You are absolutely right. But I think the problem is that most people are not really aware about what common sense is. The trouble most people have with internet has little to do with no firewall or the absense of AV software. It has more to do with the fact that most people just use what they got with their PC... being Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.DuX wrote:...and a lot of common sense.
Just switching to Firefox and Thunderbird lowers the risk of virus infections with at least 95%
And here's a suggestion for people that don't have a dedicated machine available to install as a firewall but want to have a real firewall (with full control over setup) on their machine:

Yep. And again it has to do with network maintenance. On the forums for both Smoothwall and IPcop there are always a few peeps asking about an option to switch off NAT (which is almost impossible because of how these firewalls are build). I'm not completely sure about this (although it seems logical to me) but I think that non-NAT routers are prefered by ISP-like applications where there are many public servers running behind the firewall. In such a case NAT becomes a maintenance nightmare.arke wrote:Theres routers that don't do NAT?

I've heard/read reasons, none of which I have first hand experience or proof for or against;arke wrote:WHY!? WHY WHY WHY WHY DO YOU DUMBASS PEOPLE NOT CONNECT YOUR DAWS TO THE NET!?PeterL wrote:I will never connect my DAW to internet, so it's waste of money for me.
Don't say viruses. If you follow a few SIMPLE guidelines you'll never have to worry about those. Its just absolutely 100% stupid.
- Having a network card in a DAW is asking for trouble (something about IRQ conflicts/priorities)
- Connecting a DAW to a WAN is opening the door for outside problems. If your DAW is for example a commercial system and doing professional grade stuff, you wouldn't want to risk the confidentiality of your highbrow clientele, etc, to hackers, what not.
- You can save memory by disabling network related services in 2K/XP, such as workstation, tcp/ip, computer browser, networking, etc.

@susiwong,
i agree with you 100%
i was trapped the same way,
got the CD and *bump*
it is hooked to the www...
so, i told the support to erase my data,
since i trashed the mag+CD,
don't want to be *forced*
to go online everytime i format my computer.
and who knows?!
maybe there are times ahead,
when i could not afford a i-net connection,
or don't need one, etc, etc, etc.

Hi bambooman,
thanks for your post. Sorry to hear you've been "trapped", believe me, I understand your concerns.
Many of the posters will be surprised at what I say now, but it's not a contradiction:
Please do yourself a favour and install a software firewall on your PC, even a free and simple one like Zone Alarm would have asked you for permission when Samp (or, better, the magic Magix stock exchange booster tool) tried to connect you to the brave new world.
Have a nice day,
susiwong

Ok, even if Samplitude SE is just a mag-ware "teaser" (which isn't exactly the truth as they're selling it as well), a requirement of having to connect your machine to the web is just plain bad.
Personally, I *do* have all my machines connected to the web and never experienced any problems. Fine with me. I just need to plug in a network cable and any machine would be online. Could do that easily just for a registration process or some updates. And I allways do because it's easier than saving files offline. As said, fine with me.
But: I am rather computer savy, so I do know what to use and what not. Other people may not be like that...
But #2 (and that's actually the *big but*): Just imagine your studio was in some place without internet access, something such as, say, a rehearsal room.
Do the folks at Magix really expect anyone to carry their production machine home or, even worse, to a net cafe or something, just to get their software authorized?
To be honest, that's just ridiculous, regardless whether one may or may not believe in the possible danger of connecting your DAW to the web.
And no, that's no esoteric scenario at all. I happen to know quite some people that don't even have a regular phone line in their studios because it'd distract them from working.
Could only get worse if you had a studio with a dedicated machine room, the machine probably being locked into some noise reducing case, etc etc.
As said, I find this to be rather ridiculous and not a great promotion thing either. It might even scare some people away.

Hello Sascha,
really appreciate your honest post, especially since you're somewhat involved in Samp development afaik. The sad thing is, I got nothing but respect for Samplitude and the way it's evolved since the Sek'd days. Magix is a different thing though.
I was looking forward to this promo deal so much, I wanted it mostly as a wave editor and really considered the 299 Euro upgrade to compliment my SX. That's the truth, I spend more money on music soft- and hardware than is good for my banker's health and would not have hesitated to put the money down if I liked it.
In fact it's on my internet machine right now and I DO like it, as far as I can tell over my Logitech multimedia speakers instead of the Genelecs in the studio.
Since I only use legal software, most of my plugins stay in the studio, too.
Well, as long as it's good for Magix' stock exchange venture ...
I wish Samp the best of luck and promise to closely consider a purchase if the ownership should change from Magix to someone else again.
Have a nice day,

Sorry, but it seems that you're mixing me up with Sascha Eversmeier (kvr nick = (just) sascha).susiwong wrote: really appreciate your honest post, especially since you're somewhat involved in Samp development afaik.
Interesting observation nonetheless, that people seem to prefer some honest (even if negative) opinion of someone being involved into the development of something (even if, as said, it hasn't been like that in this very case). Should tell something...

Hi Sascha,
please accept my apologies for the confusion with Sascha Eversmeier.
And as far as my quoted statement goes :
In this special case though it would have taken exceptional guts for a Samp guy to write what you did.
In fact I liked your post because of the opinions you expressed, that's a fact, and I would hate to have offended you.
Peace again ?
Sometimes it's hard to communicate little nuances over the web, especially if, like me, you're not a native speaker.

no, it's not - it's basically the same company (development-wise)susiwong wrote:Magix is a different thing though.![]()
