Doing Time

You have been found GUILTY.

Guilty of using 4/4 time signature for the bulk of your work!

Your punishment: DOING TIME. An odd time. that is...

This month your entry must entirely avoid 4/4 time (and don't cheat and use 2/4 or other essentially cut or common division!). There is a world of alternate time signatures for you to draw upon: isn't it time you paid your debt to society?

1 - Submissions MUST follow these rules:

(a) encoded in either .mp3 (128kbps or lower if fixed rate ... average of 128kbps or lower if VBR) or .ogg format (quality level 4.00 or lower)

(b) A STRICT MAXIMUM of TWO MINUTES in length. Starting in 2006 I'm going to be SERIOUS about this rule. If it shows up as 2:01 in my player, then I'll allow it for reasons of rounding in different players. But you shouldn't take that chance! Any longer gets a DISQUALIFICATION. That said, if a submitted track is over length, all contestants should feel free to mock the offending entrant mercilessly into getting permission to enter a new version of correct length.

(c) entered into the contest by posting a DIRECT LINK in this RULES & SUBMISSIONS thread (use the GOSSIP thread for everything else)

(d) submitted before 11:59 PM Sunday 23rd April

2 - Your track SHOULD also ...

(a) be composed specifically for this contest

(b) be created using at least some audio plugins, virtual synths, or software studio

(c) have the FILE named in a format of "yearmonth_artistname_tracktitle" (ie - "06_02_artistname_tracktitle.mp3") or something similar bearing this info.

(d) have AT LEAST the REAL artist and title fields of the file's ID tag completed (help us out, okay? it's easier to sift through labelled entries)

3 - Only one entry per person - no resubmissions without permission from the moderator, INCLUDING for time-overage correction. PM me for permission!

4 - Any tracks not adhering to these guidelines will be very naughty indeed. Possibly disqualified upon peer review. And at least mocked for all to point and giggle.

5 - Voting (members must have at least 20 posts to vote ... although contest entrants are exempt from this ruling) will run from the submission deadline until 11:59 PM Sunday 30th April - anyone voting for themselves will find ALL their votes disqualified - any entrants not voting will also be disqualified

Post

I am early with my post this month.
For the next 3 weeks my time will be crowding up with lots of crap like ... work.

Cool ideea for this month. Composite time signatures are not so uncommon for me as Balcanic folklore (like Mid Eastern one) is relying pretty much on 7/16, 9/16, 10/16, 11/16 time signature. These rythmic formulas are called different depending on regions, but there is a scientific name for them too: aksak.

Well, I'll try to push further the chalenge of this month.
How about NO TIME SIGNATRE AT ALL? (I don't think I break the rule since doesn't fits 4/4, 2/4 or anything like it)

There is in Romanian folklore a particular genre called doina that doesn't have a time signature and doesn't need one. It's a style comming from ancient times, played mainly by shepards in their transhumance. They use self made woodwinds or panflutes for these songs and the main characteristic is that it's played free, without time signature, the notes being prolongued or shortened upon the interpret's feeling.
I don't expect to go high in the charts this month. I just want to present you another face of the music, something that some of you guys probably didn't heard before.

So here is the link to my song called simple

Markleford,

Yes, I'm guilty as charged. So thanks for the challenge. First ever 'song' in something other than 3/4, 4/4 or 6/8 or signature-less for me.

Drums: BFD CM freebie
Guitars: MIM Fat Strat into Amplitube LE on a couple different amp settings. 'Pinka-Pinka' guitar used only Amplitube LE verb. Lead goes into Big Tick Dual Delay.
EP: Mr. Tramp into GChorus (Love those GVST)
Bass: SX cheapo bass into Mackie mini comp into Voxengo Boogex with an eden cab simulation

whole thing pushed through Mackie Final Mix on the 'sell it' preset.

One point se7en five jam

This would be much more fun if I had other folks to jam with instead of just me-self.

I twisted knobs and banged my guitar in 7/8. Resulting in...

Can't seem to get the mix to my satisfaction (new gear) on this one, so I'm submitting it as is. It's mostly in 15/4 with a few other odds thrown in. It's supposed to evoke images of floating peacefully down the Nile.
