Dumb host?

Hi there, I'm fairly new to all this plugin stuff outside of my ProtoolsTDM rig.

I'd like to set up a seperate computer with just a "dumb" host, if there is such a thing, so I can just run signal processors and synths. Nothing else will run on this dedicated machine.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I apologise if this is one of those newbie questions that annoys everyone  if it is, please be so kind as to steer me toward some good resources. Thanks!

I'm not looking to share DSP between machines, I just want a shell to run VST plugins in. I don't need a sequencer either. This particular computer will have its own sound card and MIDI interface. I want to make my own "Receptor" type of box from an old computer...is there a "simple" host or a "dumb" host or a "wrapper" host or whatever you call it...maybe a "barebones" host?

I would say Energy XT,,,, you can build up a rack of synths,, and even capture the gui graphic image to help you identify the synth in the rack. Save the setup. I have not tried it ,, but it would be nice if you could boot your pc which would start Energy Xt up with the saved setup.

Um...Energy XT looks like a VST plug-in.

All I want is a no-frills app that does nothing but run VST plugins. Like I said, I want a host thats not part of some sequencer program.
