Mono Versions of plugins

I have always wondered but never knew the answer. What is the difference between the mono version and the regular version of a plugin. I just always assumed that if it is a mono track then naturally you would use the mono version? Is this correct? What would be the problem or difference if you used the regular version on the mono track. Also I guess in FL Studio you would always use the regular version since everything is stereo in there.

You save some CPU usage using mono versions, as they only process one channel, while stereo versions are fed the mono signal for both channels. Other than that, it doesn't matter.
