I want to start sampling my music collection, I have a nice Sony house stereo system with cd and a tape deck and I am planning on getting a turntable as well. I have a Sony Vaio Comp with a stock sound card and I also Have Pro Tools DIGI 001 (pci), My question is... should I sample through the sound card or the pro tools? I feel like pro tools will be cleaner but will it change the sound of the final mix after I bounce the sample from pro tools to a wav? I also have a Joe Meek compressor/ eq..... I can use my own judgement on the eq but would I want to run the samples through the compressor too? or is that a big no no? Sorry if these are foolish questions guys but I honestly don't know.

Just record them in through your digi001. I usually record my vinyl into a wav editor. It makes it much easier if more than one track off the record is being recorded at once. CD's don't even need to be recorded in a wav editor and many programs since it will rip the CD tracks to the prefered format of your choice. Part of why the wav editor is also important is to grab short single note hits it would be hard to get otherwise, it's easy to find the zero cross, and it's faster. Also once you get your turntable make sure it's grounded before you go running it into your digi001. That's my 2 cents.

I don't think ProTools will change anything to the sample when writing as a WAV. At least, it would be very bad if it would!

And I second DM: use the digi001 and a regular WAV editor (CoolEditPro, Adobe Audition, Audacity, whatever.)

The Digi001 should have better AD/DA converters than the standard Sony thingy. But you can run a test to confirm that: RMAA
