Weird and strange keyboards? Is there a demand? Absolutely.
Is there time in enough in life to use every great samplebank by Squids to its full extent? No, of course not.
Will the faithful still purchase? Most definitely yes.

Out already with Squids Vol. 2 and Weird Keyboards!

:-)

Squids are you including the Optigan chord accompaniments for vol II? Or if I am a completist should I look elsewhere?

Your connection to Aimee Man, Jon Brion, Sam Phillips etc is what got me interested in your company to begin with.

Little did I know that a Jon Brion track on the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack used an Talentmaker. The track "Phone Call" has this eerie guitar part that I really like. Turns out be from an Talentmaker sample...it justs adds this amazing emotional quality.

Squids wrote:The Fiona Apple record is really good. For some reason I was a little skeptical. I don't know why because I really like her. But, I was worried it was going to be sort of... hard to describe. Maybe dense and inaccessible? Or not melodic enough perhaps. I don't know. But, there are some good songs on it plus the sounds and production are really great. The drums sound amazing. The vibes and keyboard sounds are more like the first album which is cool. I bought it when I was out in LA this past week and listened to it over and over in the car. It grows on you. She's great. I probably could have played keys with her if I was still hanging around. I know a lot of the people she's worked with (Jon, Patrick, Brian), and that's how those things happen (one passes on to the other). Oh well. I would have liked that gig... musically speaking.
As a Jon Brian and Fiona Aplle (and Aimee Mann) fan I'd say...you should have heard the leaked version, the official is not nearly as good. The leaked one sounds a bit unfinished but it's pure Jon Brion, grooves much better too, and Fiona's vocals are far more intense there.

The bad side is, there are only really bad mp3s floating around. It'd make such a great record (IMO), the official version is just good compared to that.

Yeah, I heard a couple tracks from when Brion was doing it. I wouldn't mind hearing the whole thing. I talked to Brian Kehew who is a long-time friend about the album. I like it how it came out. But, I love Jon's work.

Does Vol1 already include other sample formats? I'd much rather have it all in native Halion format than install the ST. If you could only make HyperSonic 2 expansion mmmmmmmm

Maybe somebody could bug Jonny Greenwood and get ahold of his Ondes Martenot for an afternoon?

That would be a very good idea!

Squids said something Vol2 and that he'd make Vol1 available in other formats as well ... I don't remember the details, it's in one of these "Squid's Trons" threads...

I have enough Trons to cover Vol1, but I've got my eye on Vol2 for sure (and that Novachord, and etc)...

Thanks for finding that Doug. Makes me all excited again!! Any word about when this is gonna happen, Squids?? Don't mean to rush things,,, I know that this sort of low-fi quality stuff takes time to get together,,, but I'm in, no matter when it comes. 8)

We have to work on it on the side because of course we really want to finish Studiophonik and the Studio ProFiles. But, I have someone pooling together the material (well, also myself on weekends) to make this a really diverse and rare follow up that collectors will enjoy. I also found a few more tape heads and some other things as prizes so... it will be a fun one! I'll let you know when we're closer to prime time on it. I want to make it a really good find. You know me. ;)

I have Tron Collection Volume 1 and I am looking forward Tron Collection Volume 2. What I want to know is what Squids is going to do for an encore after his work on volume 2 is done.

I would like to see a chord organ sampler. I have a hankering for some Magnus samples or a schmaltzy Samba beat from a Wurlitzer home organ.

Squids, you put it out, I'll probably buy it. :D

I have some chord organ stuff. I own one that is an antique that I found at a fair once. A friend of mine at the time told me he found a Synthi AKS at an electronics fair for really cheap! So, this wasn't quite THAT good. ;) But, it was a good deal and sounds really cool.

By the way, guess who I talked to on the phone today! Tom Waits! I haven't talked to him in about 17 years when I sold him his Chamberlin. 1989! I told that story before about how he came over my apartment at the time in Westwood, Ca and bought my Chamberlin (I posted pics once of that actually... I wonder if the links are still active on those, they might be). Then we drove it over to his house and that's where I first saw and played a pump organ. Anyway, his manager set up the phone call and I was surprised that he remembered! Of course he LOVES that Chamberlin so the memory was attached to a good one.

Anyway, get this! Tom Waits actually bought the Squids Tron Vol. 1! That's why he called. He is doing a play in LA right now and needed some Mellotron and similar sounds to add to the orchestra. Then I also told him about Miroslav Philharmonik which he was excited about as well. I told him it is the NEW Chamberlin and actually gave him a little push to get into the latest technology because it is a lot of fun. I told them to watch my videos to see some of the twisted things that can still be done the organic nature of SampleTank-based products and these kinds of sounds. Then I told him a bit about Squids Tron Vol. 2 and he was going nuts especially about the rare keyboard extras! He was like a kid in a candy shop. I said "It will have a Clavioline" and he said "Oh really????" and "it will have a glass harmonica" and then he'd say "Oh that would be great" and then I mentioned the Electric Harpsichord, Harmoniums, Optigans, Orchestrons and he said "When is it coming out???". So, I'll think you guys can count one more in on the group buy for Vol. 2 ;)

I never got to thank him before for showing me how cool the antique pump organ thing was. You should have seen it. Like a scene from a movie. Back in '89, I am carrying this monster Chamberlin into this dingy garage and then in the corner is this funky old keyboard with pedals and I say "What is THAT????" and he says in this gravely tone "That's a harmonium. It is a keyboard that BREATHES. Go ahead kid, try it out. You'll love it." So, I said "Really?" Then I sat down and played it and there was something magical about it. All the mechanical noise just to get tones out but the whole thing was a beautifully flawed sound. I could see the appeal! So, I was on the hunt to get one. I ended up finding a few but I only kept one, the one that I have now and will never sell. A folding harmonium. Ironically, the folding harmonium that I sampled for Squids Tron Vol. 1 wasn't even mine! It was almost exactly the same as mine but belongs to Jon Brion. I borrowed it from him to play on Sam Phillips Martinis and Bikinis album. Then of course I sampled it before I gave it back... "sample everything" :hihi: Anyway, I finally got to thank him for that and he was thrilled you could tell. That kind of thing interested him.

Anyway, it was otherwise a pretty crappy day yesterday. But, this helped to make up for it a bit. Every once in a while I get a phone call like that. I told you guys the whole Herbie Hancock story. Same kind of thing where I had met him before then years later he was buying SR sounds and I got to bring up where I met him and supposedly ;) they remembered. These are the things that are fun for me. Probably only people who were interested in following this thread in the first place even care! ;) Thought I'd share something fun. Go check out Tom's new play! It'll have Squids Tron and Philharmonik sounds all over the place. Now THAT is a play worth seeing for that reason alone! ;)

Post

Great 'Tom Waits' story, Squids! I think that those us who like these 'sounds' actually LOVE these sounds.

Post

I'll have to dig out the folding pump organ I was given and give it a play ... it's a whole lot smaller than my Hammond A-105.

Doug, wanting tron2...
