... using software and the laptop trackpad or an external tablet. Is there some sort of trackpad to MIDI converter, or some ready-made package?

Wow, that was fast :)

Now that the tablet-pad to midi part is covered, how about the software? I mean some cool real-world examples. As always, there are too many possibilities, and I'd like to start experimenting with something that already works :)

Post

That doesn't work on ALPS touchpads :( (I think because ALPS hasn't provided the driver specs or something)

But there are several XY-pads that can send CCs, and it's easy to use them to make Kaos Pad-like systems with modular hosts... like eXT.

You obviously need a host. Something like Ableton Live or Energy XT would work fine. If you are thinking about processing live inputs, you will also need a decent soundcard with low latency.

If you try Ableton Live, you can always start with the effects that comes with the software.

I use Ableton Live and I just got a Kaos Pad and the KP2 seems kind of redundant because of all the xy effects in Live.
It will make a good controller and external effect mod though.

I don't know if you're stricly looking for something to convert trackpad movements to MIDI - but if you're more interested in getting something like KAOS pad, I recommend checking out CamelSpace/CamelPhat. They are multi-effects with an XY pad which were partially inspired by the Kaos pad.

Thanks

Ewwwww doggie! These 2 are the king of xy effects! Can't wait to put my KP2 as a controller on these two.

I'm freakin out!

You may want to check out the Metasurface in AudioMulch too.

That's what I was talking about re: cool real-world examples! I was pretty aware of CamelSpace, yet I completely overlooked that combination. The XY stuff in Live looks tempting, too.

My partner and I get a lot of use out of the Kaoss 2 live and we're playing some shows with a 3rd guy who can really make it do amazing things.

I heard that Trent Resnor uses a KP2 live but he has the actual finger pad taken out and moved over by the keyboard player while the body of the KP2 is mounted behind him showing all kinds of funky lights when used becuase the finger pad is gone.

Anyone else see this?

(I will return your thread, I promise)

There was a guitar reviewed in the UK Guitar and Bass magazine ( http://www.guitarmagazine.co.uk/ )I saw a few months ago, that had a built/wired in kaoss pad attatched at the end of the saddle right on on the guitar body, with midi outputs of course. For the life of me I can't remember what the guitar company was called. I know the guitars are made in either the UK or US. This is a wonderful magazine for actual guitar gear reviews and new guitar technology (without all the biased bull you get in Guitar World etc.), just wish it was a little cheaper here in the US.

update from previous post about the Kaoss Pad modded guitar
Saw it again in the bookstore the other day, and it's the UK mag called Guitarist, I belive it was the March or April issue, and in the new guitars review section. It's a Mansons.uk.co modded Fernandez strat with the Fernandez sustainer pickup and a modified Kaoss Pad mounted behind the bridge/saddle. They don't have it on thier site for some reason, but's it reviewed in the magazine with pics and everything.
