yeah I guess you're right...I'm a coward, a terrible person...certainly not the man you are....and it's doubtful I'll ever play guitar like you...:hail: oh how I wish I were you

Yeah, I've been running my old Soldano preamp (an SP-77) through GRs cabinets. Quite nice.
I wonder what you'd be using the RedBox for though. I mean, Soldanos have line outs, you could just feed them straight into your soundcard. At least that's what I've done.
Unfortunately the Soldano still needs some servicing, so I won't post any sound examples yet.

Right now I'm fooling around with some Mesa V-Twin preamp that I could buy for a laughable price, and it actually seems to be quite great so far (mind you, I'm not into those chugga chugga sounds) along with some further GR2 tweaks.

Btw, while I found your guitar sound to be quite OK, the drums were pretty "disturbing" or so...

metalifuxx wrote:yeah, I did the harmonics just to show the tone and response of the signal chain, which I'll go through:
'93 Gibson Les Paul standard (with the older humbuckers, not the newer burstbuckers) first into the Behringer Tube ultra gain Mic200 (1st guitar preamp type, with the input tube gain set to little less than halfway, and -20bdb pad on ), into Boss SD-1 pedal (tone all up, Gain about 4o'clock), into old Zoom 1010 processor (using only the metal distortion type without cab sim (wasn't really designed for amp modeling back in 1996,but those were early attempts)with flat EQ since you couldn't turn it off), then into the M-Audio mobile Pre. I used Guitar Rig 2 for the cabinet modeling, using the gratifier cabs and condeser mics preset tweaked, some parallel compression(50dry/50wet), EQ to taste and mix well with the drums, then a little BBE Sonic Maximizer. Ahh yes, and the pick is a small red dunlop jazz thumb pick, John Petrucci I guess uses these, and they offer great dynamic control, and give a thicker rich sound than the normal sized thin/medium picks. I keep a stack of different kinds of picks of different thickness and size on my desk to get different tones and responses according to what I'm playin and playing into. The pick can make all the difference sometimes.

The Zoom's built-in compression is crappy so I opted not to use it for extra sustain. Ran out of cables so I couldn't attatch the Boss compressor/sustain pedal early in the chain.

I was trying to emulate the gain staging and the response you'd get from a real amp head, using the Behringer Tube gain first in the chain.

I will get some of my real songs up when I setup a soundclick account, and put finishing touches on them when I can mix better on my friends monitors. More of a prog rock/metal type sound akin to Porcupine Tree , not chuggah. This was just an example to see if I could get metal without mic+amp.

Would love to see what my Soldano goin through my friend's hughes N kettner DI-red box with gt rig2 cabinets sounds like. Anyone try anything like that yet?
Sorry about that, I got a little side track by some little gnat buzzing about...I'm looking forward to hearing some of your songs...I like how much thought you put into your set-up (however everyone knows I'm not much of Les Paul fan) and the the BBE is quite wise imo. Obviously you're not just a preset guy, which is good...as for picks (here comes the pic again) I use Fender type picks (but they have my name on em) for about half my stuff. I also use custom made brass picks, some that I made in the early 80's.

They are .015" thick and are razor sharp..after a while they do build up a burr so I use an emery board to sand the burr down. I like em because they actually form to my grip (brass is so soft and they are pretty thin), so they fit, if you will...but they're not good for everything, actually the more I think about it I really jam with the brass and play live with the brass more than I record with it..of course they are not all that great for acoustics.

Soldano into a GR2 cab sim...I think Sascha would be the one to ask about that, but it sounds promising. I have a Marshall tube pre-amp, but it really sucks for recording. It's great for live, but even with the "cab" switch it has, it still is just way too much, yet not enough for direct. Mic-ed up through the rest of my rig it sounds good, but my present living situation makes it hard for open mic recording...I have to turn it up louder than my nieghbors would be happy about (part of living in an apartment), so I do okay with the PODs (xt live and 2.0) and my sansamp GT2...which I managed to bring back from the dead this week...;)
