i used to use N-track studio a couple of years ago. it was great to learn on and for a good price. i did mostly audio recording and didn't do much midi unfortunately. i've since switched to cubase se and never looked back. this was after the release of n-track version 4 which was very buggy. there have been a ton of updates so it's probably pretty stable now. i'd demo it for a while and see what you think. maybe some others will chime in about cakewalk home studio. good luck.

I've been using NTrack for a number of years now. Others have reported various bugs (but which app hasn't had that), but other than one or two I've had a very stable time. Flavio (the dev) is generally quite quick to attempt a patch if you use the feedback form on the website.

The MIDI editting is basic, but works OK. The Audio is actually quite impressive (it lacks an audio editor, but will launch an external one as required), and is the only app which correctly aligns and processes the naff soundcard in my laptop. I've tried others, but get chopped buffers, or they are put into a track with a wrong Offset.. NTrack always seems have have worked.

It requires .net, which most recent PCs will now have installed; and shows that Flavio is prepared for the future. There's also a 64bit edition. He's been rebadging VSTs recently, so there is more for your money too.

I would say that it's worth giving it a reasonable go, but try others too. Many other cutprice DAWs started from MIDI (cubase, cakewalk, etc), and so have quite advanced features for the money. NTrack started as an Audio app, and so is far better at that; however, once the MIDI is routed to a VSTi, it's just audio and is pretty good.

Thanx to both of you for your informative replies. I demo'd N-Track for about a year or so before buying when 4.0 was released. During the demo period I also demo'd just about any program I could find...Fruity Loops, Ableton, Acoustic Labs, Kristal, Sonicism, Arturia, Quartz Audio, Voyetra, Mulitrack Studio, etc as well as reading Tweak's Quide an Checking out the high dollar software, Stienburg, Pro Tools, Propellerhead, Reason, an so on. Pretty heady stuff but I've been mess'n with keyboards for alittle over twenty years now an like computers the evolution of electronic keyboards has turned out to be so much more than the early synths of the seventies who's sounds at the time where mezzmerinzing at the very least, aka. Pink Floid,Procal Harum....blew a hole in the Phil Spector "Wall of sound", think Madgical Mystery Tour? But I regress, excuse me...I've accumlated over 600 tracks that I kin find on this computer alone but there's probably more cuz I blew up my first 40 gig hard drive in 3 months playing with all the toy's. I rearmed an Replaced with a 120, fresh copy of XP, an just a wee bit more wisdom. That was over a year ago an so now you might understand why I'm here. 120's don't mean nothing these day's so I'm ready to thin the herd an make some financial decisions here which I'm sure You all know require's a bit more than casual interest, especially if the Wife finds out. Tough one to justify, right up there with New Flyrod or a trip to Home Depot. Nothing happens without alot of Questions an justifying music creation software is hard to do unless you got the answers. Trouble is you need the software to get the answers as in the end beget's the means. A hard sell for a spouse who already treats your obsession like "The other Women"...( not too far off when you think about it an I try not to). Luckily I already have sufficiant hardware to last way past any attempt at sabotage on her part, She just recently dropped me at work, handed me a sandwich, said "Don't want to be late, do We? and in the same breath said "By the way, ,I'm going home an cutting all the cable's on the computer in your studio with my pruning shears, have a Nice Day!" I'll let You know what happens because She's visiting her mother next month for two weeks an I'm doing my homework as best I can before she leaves because after she's gone I shall have to allow a significant "Upgrade of software as well as hardware".....I know, it's not a "Flyrod" but afterall, there was nobody else to make that kind of decision but Me, Honey....an before you lose yer mind about all this "New" stuff, come take a listen an maybe you see what I mean, I did my "Homework" first an everthing!

Thanx again an God help me, this better be good or She'll be posting in here tell'n you'all where to find the body,LOL!
