Can anyone recommend a source of convincing violin harmonics? I'd rather not buy an entire string section to get this (or if I have to I'd like to eat that month too!)

Yes Check out the Garritan Stradavari - its really going to please you. It has harmonics and its the best and most expressive 'real' acoustic instrument on the planet. You wont find any violin more authentic - needs Kontakt 2 (which is being updated by end of month).
