looking forward to the release, though personally i think this is among the ugliest gui's for any of your products, yet. also, reading the interface from left to right, to me it feels strange starting off with the lfo section.
it is easy on the eyes, though and relatively easy to find your way around - even though for discord, this doesn't do much for me, looking at deverb's old gui, this lighter theme may in fact cause me to consider purchasing that plug - the dark gui is just very hard to read, which is why i never seriously considered buying it.
being able to pitchshift left and right separately will be cool, though.
sorry for being so harsh about the gui, i hope you know not to take this personal.

I, too, am confused by "jumped the shark" - does it mean perhaps "taken on too much"? As in trying to get the jump on a shark - an imposible task under normal situations - I need an English to English translationCrandall1 wrote:All righty. We've put the new UI in to freeze, so I can leak it here. Won't be long now. This one is obviously much less cluttered than the original, and the flow is more obvious, I believe. I decided to go with a more modern UI mainly because after I saw that new Admiral Quality synth here on KvR, I'd decided that hardware-looking UIs may have jumped the shark.
Anyways, enjoy. Comments appreciated, as always, but the UI is in code freeze, so unless something is drastically wrong, that's what's going on the final product. Ronin and Deverb will be getting this same facelift, theoretically.
But in happier news that GUI looks terrific. I'll buy the thing ASAP!!
peace,
pj

Also, I should note that you can't hurt my feelings by saying you don't like the UI. Every time we release a product, if it has a hardware UI, I'll get a hundred-odd emails complaining that it should be more modern. If it has a modern UI, I get just as many emails complaining that it should be a hardware look.
I really can't win, so I've stopped caring. I make it look good to me, and once I'm happy with it, I send it to Adam, and that's about the end of the discussion.
So, no big deal either way. Although, of course, I'd be thrilled if everyone liked it, but I know that ain't gonna happen.

I'm 55 and I just don't remember that episode of Happy Days - or much of anything else - what was the question again? ....Crandall1 wrote:I guess I'm too old for this forum.

if you want i can be a little more precise, though - it's actually the 3d parts that i don't much care for. it doesn't seem congruent with the otherwise modern look.Crandall1 wrote:Also, I should note that you can't hurt my feelings by saying you don't like the UI. i liked the cell-shaded guis a lot. dubstation is great that way, also with the non-standard perspective - with the number of controls on discord2, i can understand that that is out of the question.
as i said - i do like that it's easy to read, though. the knobs are nice, too - i like that kind of visual feedback.

Hmm, on the one hand - I think this is the most functional GUI AD has done yet. I like that - I can't wait for the GUI update for Ronin because frankly, the current version is really difficult to read, the legending on the matrix is just so tiny!
On the other hand, this GUI is not really too distinctive - aside from the AD logo on the bottom, there is nothing to me that indicates that it's an AD plugin - if you look at Phase Two, it's immediately apparent who made it. It's not that important to me from an end-user standpoint, but it's definitely a good thing for you guys if a potential customer can immediately associate a plugin with AD just by looking at it. Perhaps not something to change for discord, but something to think about for ronin and deverb (both of which I also eagerly anticipate, BTW).

The GUI is ... definitely unexpected,
but as long as the plugin 'sounds' super wonderful,
then it won't really matter what it looks like to me.
i just want functionality and performance.
Looks can wait until the album cover.

For those nervous about our "look," rest assured that three things are true:
1) We've decided to strive for usability above all things. I personally prefer hardware-looking UIs, because I started out in a "real" studio, still have one, and find that sort of plugin more intuitive. But for something like Discord or Ronin, it is simply too complex, and we'd end up with something like the UI I mentioned, which is hard on the eyes, and who's function is not readily apparent.
2) Our simpler plugins will continue to have the cel-shaded hardware look you know and love. Our most successful product (Dubstation) has this, and its release as, as far as I am aware, the first 3D cel-shaded plugin, helped its sales as much as its sound. So I'm not blind to the wishes of the general public.
3) As was noted, the UI has nothing to do with what it sounds like. It'd sound the same no matter which shader I use in 3DS Max to make the knobs.
When I have to fit nearly 40 controls on a single pane, Urs' methods seem to make more sense. If a plug only has 5 to 10 controls, it's no problem to do the cel-shaded look, of course. But it just isn't logical for this. And since I had to do one flat-on anyways, I decided to go with something a little more outlandish. I did BigSeq with a flat-on hardware look, and while it is certainly fine for what it is supposed to communicate, there is nothing there that excites comment. The simple fact that people either love or hate this one (as witnessed in this thread) means to me that I hit pretty close to the mark.

I loved the look of the v1 Discord but you are right that this is much easier ont he eyes and you can instantly see what your settings are.Personally I do not care too much how it looks it is how it sounds that matters.
