"And Justice For All" is notoriously terrible in guitar tone department. Most of the "fizz" that you refer to is diminished by nothing more complicated than a gate. I know the "crunch" you're talking about, though, and all I gotta say to anyone reading this thread is-- less gain, more mids!

System of a Down that you refer to, I agree totally about. I got flamed in another thread once for thinking of it as "punishing" (much to my annoyance), but the fact is that it has that hit-you-in-stomach tone achieved by SOAD *is* actually partially created by less gain, so perhaps the person I was annoyed at was right after all by calling it "not high gain". ;)

On page six I mentioned the "less gain is more balls" concept. I stand by that. You've gotta have some gain, sure, but the harmonic content can't be so out of control as to make a complex chord fizzle out of recognition. The palm and ghost notes are what make a right-hand metal god a right-hand metal god. My 2 cents.

An ultimate example would be Trouble's "Pychotic Reaction". Brutal riffing with just enought 70's to be cool yet very modern.

yeah, I love it, too.

Another retro example would be "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" at 3:19. Iommi plunges in with that uber-riff and it's all over. The intervals are doing half the work, the tone the other half. It's not as a heavy as the Trouble riff, but it illustrates the point.

:dog: I know I'm screwed up, but I have every Ozzy album, but the only black sabbath (save for a couple of songs) I like are with Dio. I think though that's because back in the day I was not aware of Iommi's tunings and his sound confused me...
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Certainly the Dio era was cool, too. Who can argue with "Country Girl" or "Children of the Sea"? My god, you can hear the bass as if it were it's own voice! hehe. :)

I only have these at the moment:

Plastic Green Head
Psalm 9
Trouble

I used to room with a guy who had Run to the Light on vinyl, though, so I've heard it but can't remember it except for good impressions. Did you ever get into the North Carolina band Confessor? If not, to me they represent some of the best odd riffs and original approach to doom as anybody. http://confessorband.com/ ...detuned madness with an original singer

Currently, Evoken is my fave doom band. They're new to me but apparently have been kind of seminal. I live in a sheltered world, limited by cash and by time.

Run to the Light is way heavier(check out the video link I sent you) and in a lot of ways a better album; the self-titled LP just had superior production with a mellower sound.

I listened to Confessor ages ago; can't remember shit about em..
