Is it me or does Pocket Limiter flatten the whole mix?

I use Pocket Limiter for a very long time now but today I tried GVST's Limiter right here http://www.gvst.co.uk/gmax.htm"GMax" and it seems not to flatten my mix as much as Pocket Limiter does. My whole mix was more breathing (had more dynamcs) compared to when I used Pocket Limiter. Maybe it's the release function wich Pocket Limiter has not. Another thing: Pocket L. stops at "0" db. There is no headroom at all, right? GMax has a ceiling function where u can let stop everything at -0,3 db so u got some headroom left. I really liked TBT's Limiter for it's transparence and small CPU usage, but now I'm on with GMax cause in this way my mix is more alive.
Has anyone noticed the flattening thing else here? Or is it just me?

I would say that the Gmax is more rms than Tls Pocket limiter.
You get more volume with PL and more "steady" with Gmax at fast release...
Gmax sounds really clean and good... great freeware.. so you
got two freeware Limiters to choose from... neat!

Ive had some crazy issues with pocket limiter that keeps me from using it. In eXT if f**ks up my song so that it progressively gets quieter and quieter.
Do not lick the fablanky

Still love my Pocket Limiter just to make things louder. And I feel Pocket limiter makes my songs sound a bit warmer, GMax is much cleaner, but I love the pumping effect GMAx does with minimal release
Btw: No crazy issues in Ableton 5

Hm, sounds really tranparent to me, so, yeah, why not? But why don't you try it yourself...it's free

Funny, I guess it depends on your input material, but I just tried TbT and Gmax on a rock song, and TbT sounded way more transparent at 4db gain.

Hm, maybe depending on the Monitor setup. I got the ESI NEar Experience 5. But I always have trouble calling something warmer or more transparent etc. Couldn't even notice the warming effect on Vintage Warmer...
Guess for me sometimes it's more about like/dislike.

OK here we are, see what you think:
Dry
Pocket Limiter
GMax
It's a pretty hot mix to begin with, not the best test perhaps. These are at default settings, +4db gain. I'll just say I have no agenda: I got equal love for TbT and GVST; use them both all the time.

Hey nice work bduffy! The thickening thing is maybe what I call "warmer". That's what I always liked on Pocket Limiter. And you're right: GMax sounds more like a compressor. On my music (electronic/techno, and I think I heard it on your one too) GMax causes a little puming effect that I really like. Like a compressor on high ratio.
Pocket Limiter is definitely good in making things louder (as your sample proofs), but to spare dynamics I'll start takin' GMax.
For tranparency...as said before: I can't hear any difference
, maybe I just don't know where to look ähh, listen closer, well.. where the "transparency" shows up

Thanks, adl. Well, all I mean by "transparecy" (and what I think is generally meant) is that you can't tell if it's on; it just sounds louder. It's not what you hear, it's what you're not hearing, which is a good feature on a limiter if you're looking for just raising the volume without pumping.adl wrote:Hey nice work bduffy! But I agree: Gmax works well on dance/electronic, I tried it out. Perhaps that was the intention? I know Daniel is a drummer and perhaps that's why his are more geared toward the big rock sound.
Anyway, fun test, great plugs.
