Is it me or does Pocket Limiter flatten the whole mix?

Don't forget George Yong's W1 or BuzMaxi 3! These two amongst the most transparent of them all.

And if you've got a bunch of money laying around that you don't want, there's always the Waves L1...

Ahhh, now I see! I always thought transparency is about that you can hear every detail of your music most clearly! So for example if you have a very quiet background melody (or hihat, or whatever) you may here it as clear as possible, so that every detail of your music "shines" through the hole mix even if u turn things up.

I was always listening close if the limiter eliminates the little/quiet things in my mix :dog: but it's more about getting louder without pumping or "changing" the whole sound! Well, in that way Pocket Limiter is awesome!! Love u daniel (and ur work)!! marry me!!! (men can do in germany)

The sound of Pocket limiter was warmer, and the Gmax was more clear in the sound (Crispy).
So i guess they both have their use for different tasks and i think that both of them are great.

Save me a drink at the wedding party!

Glad you got that sorted out. I'm afraid the only thing that'll allow you more 'transparency' in your mix is you! :)

Actually, the L2 is the standard one now (also L3) and it's still the best, IMHO. But these freebies are pretty damned close! Oh: Voxengo Elephant is a lower-cost, no-dongle contender too.

oops, sorry. I knew that...it's been awhile since I've had access to Waves stuff though...

Sure, I'm just being strangely bitchy today (Monday?). Don't mind me. :D

I disagree with George Yong W1 being very transparent. It is very good on tracks I find, (bass guitars and such) but not for entire mixes, and that includes the Waves L1 since that wasnt really that great on mixes, I found the L2 to be a major upgrade, for full mixes,, TO me the Pocket Limiter is very good freeware, I do like it compared with Voxengo Elepahant, which has been my limiter since I got it, I use it over the Waves L2.

BUt if you think the PL doesnt pump enough for you then you could easily put a compressor in front of the limiter, which usually will make the Limiter even MORE transparent(depending obviously) but this way the limiter is not just squashing the peaks, It would just be taming the loudest peaks. whcih would make the LIMITER more transparent, now the compressor could be adding a ton of artifacts to the sound. SO if you set them up in relation with each other, I find it the best way to get a full mix. SO if you like the percieved fullnes PL gives, then compress lightly before and use the PL after and you still would get the PL's character without flattening your mix..

I use GMulti sitting in front of Classic Master Limiter as my default setup.

You know, I was thinking this morning that I should've mentioned that GMulti is probably a better choice than GMax; excellent sound on that one.

I use GMulti right before GMax (really should donate something to that guy  ) And I tried a (singleband)compressor before Pocket Limiter but that was right when I noticed the flattening effect. Well, actually I noticed when I compared PL to GMAx. However, for my the freewarestuff is good and good enough. Downloaded some demos but ended up using my freeware solutions cause they are less CPU hungry and often easier to use (definitely a point to me right after soundquality). Will try out Buzzmaxi 3 again, started with that one 3 or 4 years ago but when Pockt Limiter crossed my way it seemed the absolut right thing to me.

Haven't got my Esi's right now (monitors) cause there where some soundtroubles  Now I have to wait till they are fixed :x

My worst nightmare! I'm not sure what I'd do if my monitors crapped out...I have the extended service plan (Guitar Center chipped it in for free...hooray for dumping loads of money at Guitar Center...), but I don't even want to think about going several weeks without them <shudder>...

Yeah I hope they fuxxing hurry :smack:

Luckily this should be a warranty thing so they just send me new monitors and can keep the broken :P

No, I agree, PL is the best. I like the BuzComp series too, modelled after Waves products, it seems. There was a beta up for his multiband that was quite impressive too, but not sure where to get it. There is also a great limiter (again, modelled after L2) called "Volcano" (not FabFilter) and a multiband one too made by Sweetboy...looks like it's hard to get, and I don't have here. Let me know if you want them, they're quite nice and easy to use.

Sorry to hear about your ESIs! What was the problem?

hmm, just tested my 'freeware' limiters on some horn tracks I'm working on
W1
TL 1.2
mda Limiter
GMAX

my conclusion is they all offer good things, and they can all be setup for crap.
I'd never bothered with the TL 1.2 before, but it's dead simple to use, and sounds like a limiter should (as do the others)

thanks for the heads up on Pocket Limiter!
