The pitch-shift effect was autotune. There is also a slight vocoder-ish quality to some of those notes, which may or may not have been a digitech talkbox thing, the producers were cagey about the use of autotune for obvious reasons.

Now let it die, please...

not so obvious to me. could you tell more? i don't guess, they want prevent the effect from being copied (since this has already been done much too often) - or is the interview from the late 90's?

erm, cos using autotune inplies that the singer is, erm, out of tune

@Krim: Compared to Sonny, Cher has always been square on the note.
