Speaking of artificial aids: When she performed in Richmond, Virginia (the city I live just outside) someone stole one of her fancy wig/headgear things. Eventually gave it back.

I know something like this can be done with Yamaha's Pitch Fix, as shown in this video. (You gotta admit, Bert Smorenburg rocks!) Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, just one out of many options.
