filterbank impulses

I was wondering if anyone used once a filterbank to create some good Impulse Response...
I have a VF11 which can be used as a filterbank , but don't know how to create impulse with it, and as i see more and more plugins developed after impulses (acquit SP1200 using mpc impulse so achieve that 12Bit sound...), i was dreaming about a free bank of filterbank IR, of about a plugin using IR to make filterbank sound...
DO such impulse alrady exists ?
Would such a plugin hard to create ?

One of the problems is that an impulse only describes one specific setting. For any control over the effect you want to change the settings, which affects the IR. So you have to implement IR morphing or something alike for a nice controllable effect.
Creating an impulse file is very simple. You create a vanilla impulse WAV file (one sample hitting 0db ceiling, followed by some seconds of silence) and record that through the hardware you want to capture. Presto!

Yes, i know that, but even we still find many impulse of compressors or eQ, that works the same way : we would just have to make a bank of "typical" settings, as it can be done for LA2A compressors on noisesvault...One of the problems is that an impulse only describes one specific setting.
I was thinking about something very simple...
My english is quite bad,so could you explain what "vanilla" means ? (i only know vanila ice cream or the so-called rapper vanilla ice, but i think this is not what we're dealing with !!
But i think i had once a vsti aimed at creating noise to create impulse files.. i'll try that...

"Vanilla" is like the icecream: without any typical flavour. Like an all-purpose setting.

ok
so a white noise wave with a short attack and nearly no decay could be okay ?
I'll try to do it !
thanx

You could maybe do it for a fixed filterbank. So you'd have something like 8 narrow bands at fixed frequencies, and just control gain for each band.
Doubt I'd want to do that, as it would be tedious in the extreme to set up and manage. I find the same is true when using EQ IRs, since EQs for me are only useful when adapting to the content of the music in question, not predefined settings.

Well, i used to like Wok FIlterbank, but it is a bit cpu high, and the sound is not always the one i would expect... I think it is still too digital, "syntheditesque"... I would like an update, with presets, more cpu friendly, and i'd rather like to have less cpu consumption and more accurate tweaking than audio visualisation...
Nweq is quite good too at making those sounds too (i think it sounds a bit more mellow than the Wok one, which can also get sometimes very close from the real stuff, but not allways...).
I would like something sounding like some console tracks (a german band)... quite lofi, dirty, but also mellow and warm... nearly like an old vocoder...
But, WOk, I really don't want to denigrate your work, really ! Is any update planned ?

Isn't it true that convolution only works for linear dsp processes, i.e. not interesting filter distortions etc.?

I have been recording impulses using white noise this afternoon, and the result, usd in SIR, is quite acceptable...
I never get into synthedit, but i'm wondering if it is hard to set up a convolution plugin... ?
This could worth it, i guess...

Yeah, convolution would only be good for capturing a static filter response. A big attraction of filter banks is the sweeping sounds provided by envelopes and modulation. You can't get any of that with convolution. Likewise, using impulse responses of compressors are equally pointless in my opinion.kuniklo wrote:Isn't it true that convolution only works for linear dsp processes, i.e. not interesting filter distortions etc.?
