new little bug : The eq makes SOundFOrge8 display an error dialog box when opening and scanning for new vst...

Post

I just tried the new updates. In Cubase SX:

EQ: Doesn't seem to work at all.

Compressor: same thing: freaks out during saves. every dial on the interface spins uncontrollably (Exorcist-style!) and the audio is garbled as well. CPU seemed better, though.

Post

re-exported the dll's, there were some bugs with regards to vst parameters etc, so a few weird behaviours should be rectified:

Compressor

Equalizer

Will have to look into the "flip through all presets upon save/load" bug as well.

I'll give this a try at work, I can try it out on a couple of other machines/hosts there. My machine at home hasn't been 100% stable, so it could be something on my end..

Post

There are most likely still some issues in some hosts, so any bug reports are most welcome. The exorcist behaviour is probably still there for instance :)

Yep, Linda Blair is alive and (not)well. :D I'm still getting the crazy dials and the EQ just doesn't seem to do anything to the sound at all here at work. Cubase SX 2.2 and Nuendo 3.2

Are you sure that the on/off switch is set to "on"?

:D

Oh man...Mondays...sorry. EQ is working fine.

Post

This EQ is INSANE!!! I really like the compressor as well with all that it can do. Would a small numerical readout be possible for the EQ, like the Betabugs Bugpass has?

Post

Yeah, I'm really digging the sound on this EQ - you said this is standard SynthMaker stuff? I do have to mention that the settings aren't recalled when I close and open my project, nor can I save or load the settings via .fxp. Sounds good, though! Really pumches up thin loops!

Post

I love the sound of both of these after a quick test but they seemed kinda cpu hungry (can't remember how much exactly here at work) and I do wish for a numerical readout window indicating the frequency and the db level. Maybe you could put one in the middle of the bottom panel there?

The EQ crashed FL too once but I really only spent about 3 minutes total with each one and I crashed the EQ by crazily moving one of the points around

Readouts can easily be added. Will look into it! Thank you so much for the praises!

bduffy: indeed, they both are standard SynthMaker stuff, any suitable changes we make to them will be brought over to the toolbox versions. You're very right about the preset thingy though, I quite forgot to add a preset manager to it :)

smart: the compressor uses a fair bit of CPU (4-5% here on my Athlon64 3200+), but the EQ won't even show up on the readings. Will have to have a look at the instability you mentioned though :)

Post

NIce : now they both work in Live5 on my system !

_ The eq is very versatile, easy to use and efficient (haven't tried it yet for accurate sound manipulation, but as a filter it is a killer, and for "basic" stuff it works fine). (and it is my cpu 's best friend !)

_ the big issue with the comp has been fixed : i can browse presets, i have no huge cliiping... So i can say it works.
but i still see some possible improvements :
- i do still think that it takes too much ressources (8-10%, even inactive.. not reeeeeaaaally too much, but a bit..) ;
- when i tweak the "ahead" knob, i hear strange pitch-shifting ! It is funny, but not very musical...
- when i set the attack time to nearly fully on the left, i hear a lot of distortion, but not a very "musical" distortion..
- there could be some improvements on the low ends.. I like pumping & breathing compressors, i like dirty ones, but i like them because it gives sounds more "b_llocks", it enhances, and fattens drumloop, using a certain kind of eq and makes cymbals pump and kicks comes out.. But here, too many times, it fattens in adding distortion, but does not add dynamics to the low kicks.. It is kinda har to explain, but here, some kicks can get lost into distortion and get a bit muddy.. DigitalFishPhones or Buzroom Grancomp makes Kick kicking more... (I don't want to be rude, i like the comp, but with such a cpu usage and so many parameters to tweak, i'd expect a better sound quailty in every circumstances)... The first preset is very good on beats, but the comp should/could be more versatile... (it is my opinion, some may have a different one...)...

in conclusion, i'd say the best surprise did not come from where i'd expected : the eq is very basic but efficient, althought the compressor was yummier with so many features, but, even if it is good, is not the "bread&butter"one (because of the cpu), nor the huge dynmaic sound mangler i'd have dreamt about in seeing it for the first time... (but it is on good way !).
Keep on !;)

Thanks for the feedback!

If you get too much distortion it is most likely because if a too hot signal going into the soft saturator, pull down the "out" knob to decrease the distortion! I take it this was when using upwards compression?

Post

hey, when you first load the EQ (dont know about the comp as i'm having probs here on my pc) it defaults to off, and then when I switch it to ON, the fonts for the ON and OFF labels change. I just thought that was kinda weird and wanted to point it out.
