I have recorded a short Bach piece, complete with my shoddy playing skill, no edits or cheating, and rendered it out using three popular piano VSTi's. Let the judging begin!

piano3 all the way. I love the malmsjö grand!
the second piano had some serious release related problems. sounded unrealistic and shit. the first piano was ok and worked, but nothing special.
more malmsjö (from my chordspace playa demo) http://www.michaelkingston.fi/files/playahs_lullaby.mp3

2 kind of sounds like a disklavier, where the notes are played too fast for a natural sound. I assume that wasn't the intention. Not a very nice sounding piano to my ears.
3 and 1 are okay, I think I like the muted sound of 3 over the sugary brightness of 1.
But as I've not done any tests with any of the most popular piano sets, I couldn't tell you what they are.

Maybe a few more responses before I reveal which is which?
I can also post the MIDI file, in case anyone else wants to render with their preferred pianos....

How would I adjust BPM for a WAV file? Unless you mean that piece was played faster than it is traditionally; I've never heard anyone else ever play it so I have no reference...In that case BPM setting has nothing to do with it, that's just me playing....lumcas wrote:Yes, check your BPM setting. Don't know if I'm doing something wrong but it plays 4x faster on my system(rough guess) Like that, all of them sound terrible. Poor Bach.

You are kind of a fast guy, aren't you?
Anyway:
http://www.bachcentral.com/midiindexcomplete.html
It's Well Tempered Clavier, Part I, Prelude 1.
Although this one is horribly played, it gives you the idea. Cmon man, slow down...
Back to the subject. I own NI Acoustik Piano, The Grand 1, and Galaxy Steinway. None of it I'd say.

thanks for the link to the Bach pieces!
I'm a little disappointed at so few comments on the sounds. About 30 people downloaded them and so few comments. There have been so many debates about piano libraries, I figured we'd have a quick reaction to these. Anyway, time to take them down before I start getting charged for bandwidth.
Here they are:
1.) Steinberg The Grand 1
2.) Sampletekk White Grand with string resonance script
3.) ArtVista Virtual Grand Classic-Dry preset
All were put through TC ClassicVerb with the same settings. My personal favorite was The Grand 1, second was Artvista...
