I normally just silence out the bad bits. Once upon a time this plugin was decent for native work-a-day gating chores, but it's only sold in a pack. Not for those who have allergies to DX plugs. Nice classy GUI.

well that was a blast from the past! :o I remember monkeying around with their amp modeler loooong time a go.

I'm actually not looking for a gate to tame the noise levels, but something to shape the attacks and releases with, in mixing stage. Floorfish does this with success occasionally but it sounds a bit dated already.

I haven't found any gate/expander I like yet. Most of them are really old already (vintage digital  urgh!), and they sound that way as well.

What about Dominion? Isn't that its main purpose?

Post

No, actually the method in dominion is quite a lot different. It's a transient designer clone, and behaves unlike conventional expanders. And it sounds a bit shit/harsh with that oldschool digital saturator.

Hmmm, yes. Would have to agree. Somebody please: give us a new gate!

I need a good gate m'self. I'm really hoping that Torben expands upon the Gate (isn't it an expander really, nevermind) in GAC-1 and releases it as an inexpensive addition to the Gold Series.

Aside from that, though I own the Ultrafunk Gate, I almost always prefer the older Cakewalk Expander/Gate.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Aaah...kind of like an envelope generator/modifier type thingy then? You could get some pretty outrageous sounds out of analog EGs, but I don't know of anything digital that nails that greasy smooth vibe.

My sentiments exactly.

++++++ for a gate! Sonalksis product is obviously vapourware. Aleksey has hinted towards the possibility of an "essentials" or "studio tools" kind of plugin bundle where a high quality gate would be included. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Many people don't realise that a gate actually has a "sound" to it. It really DOES matter how the attack and release curves shape the audio. Many old tracks have their drum sounds (and vocals etc) defined not only by the compression/distortion but also by the gate that was used. The problem is that a gate plugin needs to have high resolution to avoid "stepping". It's the same age-old problem as most plugin compressors have.

Cheers!

oh dear dear dear.. it's just not fancy enough dahling..

goodness gracious! fdownload synthedit and build yourself one for free in five minutes.

i just made a probability based programmable buffer overrive effect.. it took me forty minutes.

most modular systems are going to provide you with subroutines for curving responsivity.... brainless operation..

Doesn't slim slow slider make a sidechain gate with all those features minus the release slopes and look ahead? Pretty damn close.

Post

Well, I just might have to build one myself if nobody else is bothered. Too bad I simply have no time right now to play around with synth maker (which would be far superior to synth edit for this task). Got lots of ideas about a gate plugin, like how the program dependency could work (affecting both attack and release), some kind of user controllable frequency dependency etc.

Cheers!

:hihi:

Right xoxos, how about it then...some sort of mad gate for the bleating masses.

You could call it The Lobster Gate...just think of the GUI possibilities. :hihi:

Squish beat me. Golden Gate is my go-to gate. Did some ridiculous things with its sidechain, way back when.

When you need THAT much control, the only thing to do is go in and edit that wave. ;)
