Hiya,

A question to find a way to create the "tupac california love" effect: Yea, I know ... a vocoder. But how exactly can you create that robotic effect? I tried every vocoder I could find, to no avail. Can anyone share a light on this?

Get a talkbox:

You see, that tube in the guy's mouth runs down to the talkbox module. The synth sound (but a guitar can also be inserted) is modulated by the talkbox when he "sings" (although more like talks) with that tube in his mouth.

And you thought that tube was merely set dressing

I know the guy who actually did the Talk Box effect in California Love. He has done some things for a couple dance tracks I am working on with my dance group TheBackups.

He's looking for more work. Here's an example of something he was doing recently:
When I Come Over

his rates are reasonable. let me know if you're interested.

I think Roger troutman from the old singing group called 'Zapp' did the electronic voice in tupoc's california love. Roger is dead (RIP).He did alot of hit music with that robotic voice i.e. computer love,i wanna be your man, more bounce to the ounce etc etc

Yes Roger troutman is dead and...
No he did not do the effect on California Love. Check the Album credits.

I'm wrong about the Daft Punk one (although they do use it in places on all 3 albums), but I'm pretty sure that Kelly Watch The Stars was a Talkbox (along with most of the vocals on Moon Safari).

Bump, are there any VSTfx that can replicate the talkbox, or is an actual talkbox the only way?

you could make one. got a boom box? a length of plastic hose? a plastic funnel? voila.

a vocoder is gonna be the closest, but it wont make you sound like you have a tube stuck in your mouth!
