That's a really interesting point.

The word "HOST" strongly indicates that a primary function is actually to run other software within it... but I agree that there is no point in spending a whole load of money on a "comprehensive" host only to find that it doesn't include fairly standard features.

I'm genuinely curious though - did you buy eXT as a secondary host or (at that time) to replace Orion?

Theo, now we are talking.

ttoz wrote: Energy Xt does not even tell you where on the timeline you clip is!

It does - you just need to place the cursor at the start of the part.
No "properties" value. Have you seen the wave editor in Nuendo lately? You can do TONS of destructive processing you can't even imagine doing in EXT.
eXT isn't an audio-editor - it's vst host - the only thing I am missing is reverse (though I use that rarely) - oh, and the normalizing and trimming-features as they are now are just pathetic.

But for editing audio I usually use vst-plugins and then render. (Apart from volume and time-editing of course)

I never got all this crying for extensive audio-editing features in a sequencer.

It's nothing that I miss.
You can't even audibly preview an audio file you want to drop into your energy xt project, i mean, this is just bare necessities that it doesn't do.
sure you can.

Where is the time stretch? Pitch shift of audio?
valid argument - will probably be in XT2

Looping capabilities?

crtl+d
Have you used logic lately and worked with midi in THAT? I want precise values of each and every event right there in the piano roll.
I don't get what you mean. :?

I want notation comprehensive scoring.
then why didn't you say this in the first place? No need to look at XT2 then and probably no need to look at XT3 as well. Then simply energyXT is not for you.

I could go on replying to your other points but that doesn't make sense considering that eXT probably will never offer what you need.

Good bye Theo.

Peace! :-D - I of course have no bad blood with you as well - if I get ocassionally verbally agressive it's always meant 'on topic' so no personal grudge or something like this but just being 'locally upset'

just the good old tradition of verbal fighting without meaning abuse and without real hostility ... :-)

eXT does pitch shifting, and has a MIDI event list.

Clip properties is one of my top wishes, and I certainly understand that missing it can bother someone. Hell, there isn't even an option to change the timeline grid spacing.

jorgen has told about looking into expanding the Composer in MIDI edit to selections, I really hope it gets implemented.

Meanwhile I make music, eXT makes that easier to me, much easier than Cubase and Tracktion. eXT also makes it fast and fun, and I'm unable to put a price tag on that feature :D

I think it's awesome that pro tools got only 1%

Could you tell me how? I was in the audio browser, double clicking didn't do it, right clicking didn't do it, and I couldn't import more than one audio file at a time.
To preview the wave in the browser just left click the file and hold.

eXT is sorta like a virtual hardware studio. You take your midi and audio patch cords and set up the enviroment you want. If you want to layer 2 or 3 synths you connect midi to the synths and the synths to the audio output or mixer and then the mixer to effects or straight out, just like you would hookup hardware.

If you want to play guitar insert Amplitube in the audio path and play. To record you patch into the sequencer and connect the sequencer to the output for monitoring. You can record the same source with and without effects at the same time or insert as many other effects as you like. You can layer 3 synths into the same input and record all three a once on one track or seperated on 3 tracks.

I hardly know the program but if you think of it as racks of stuff waiting to be connected the way you want it, it helps. In a way it works kinda like Reason but with VSTs and not as limited as Reason.
Aha...that one post has possibly captured the essence of eXT and made me sit up more than any of the other mutterings. Because all of the screenshots etc and descriptions of the midi side of things make me pass it by...there's only one specific useful thing I have seen mentioned the eXT does that I can't do in SX...either in the piano roll editor, or the logical editor. That function was multiple views of CCs etc.(Although I can do that with SX, but in separate windows...) so that's nice, and all, but not alone worth the price. It sounds to me as though eXT does an awful of of the midi stuff, but nothing extra. It evens looks familiar to any Cubase user.

But that bit about the modular routings, and how you do it like h/w. Why couldn't you all spout on about that kind of thing?...that's what has to be a big advantage over any host such as Cubase (and most of the other hosts apart from Tracktion...which is out for me, because it can't compete in midi yet). That made me prick my ears up.

What I always wanted in Cubase is a mixer whereby I can simply patch cords into sockets (like a modular synth GUI)...but you need things like sockets for direct out, insert, line in, tape in etc. And it seems like maybe eXT does this kind of thing, in a visually similar way without all of the nonsense of creating groups and busses within SX (which I really find tedious, no matter how good it is at other things...). How come you all blather on about other stuff, when for ages, I would imagine this kind of secret is the main thing to tempt hardened big host users (or did you all keep it secret deliberately, huh? :x ).

See...we all use our big hosts for the flashy audio editing, midi flexibility, esoteric features - so eXT can't compete with those things. But that modular stuff attracts me. 'Ow much 'ee it?

Anyway...whoever wrote those words I quoted...thankyou. You've actually given me a good reason to look into eXT and possibly use it well. Whereas I've read 2 years worth of blather about it from fanboys who didn't actually make any sense about why it's good. All I ever got the impression it was, was a fancy analogue-esque sequencer type thingy. No use being a fanboy, unless you're literate. I'm just piised off that nobody seems to have articulated why I might have missed out on this thing  .

Why couldn't you all have just said why it's good, instead of trying to promote the stuff that other hosts do? :hihi:

Post

I am being serious, by the way.

That short description of it will actually make me look into it, and try a demo. I take it there is a demo?

Post

of course theres a demo. Only limitation is you cant re-load projects. You can save them, but u need to buy a licience file to unlock eXT so you can load em up again.

The only grudge i have against Energy-XT is its not PRACTICAL to work with odd-time signatures. The counting goes 1,2,3,4 and even the measure/beat count goes by that, no matter what. Thats the most annoying thing for me.

Other than that, its a pretty sleek app. I love it. :)

Ttoz also said that already but I think it means you did read my description throughly enough:

- one single audio-clip can contain as many audio-channels (sub-tracks) as you like. You double-click an audio-clip and a dedicated editor opens where you can do comping etc. . :-D

-eXT has ghostable and mutable automation-clips. You edit one ghost and the others follow accordingly. The same goes for tempo- and time-signature clips. :-D

Can SX do this? :-)

Post

Hi jens,
i dont know if SX can do it, but Sonar 4 can certainly do all of the above you just mentioned. It even has advanced ghosting options. I'm happy that Energy-XT has the same features. I rarely use ghosting, but i certainly use clip mutes. :)

you already said that in the eXT-forum and got spanked for it - fancy another round? :hihi:

You critic is valid of course (I reported it ages ago) but it's far from making it terribly difficult to work with odd time-signatures.

(3/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 7/8, 9/8, 9/16, 10/16, 11/16, 13/16, 15/16 - yadda yadda yadda - I use them all regualarly in eXT )
