How do you get the midi-pc-keyboard thing in FL to output on all 16 midi channels? (omni, right?)

I am not new to FL but I am new to midi (output, input, channels, etc.)

Thanks.

You mean you want to have your PC keyboard control 16 different instruments each on their own channel?
I'm new to FL but looking at the omni switch in the MIDI settings, it appears you can only use one channel at a time with omni. However, using ENERGY XT as a VST in FL, you can do what you want.

Yes. If I had a midi keyboard controller, I would be able to control particular channels or all channels with it, right?

Well, you could control a specific MIDI channel depending on which one was selected on your controller. If you want to control multiple instruments simultaneously, you would "layer" the instruments within the same channel.
All that means is you would have multiple instruments sharing the same channel.

I see. I am trying to figure out multitimbral instruments (samplers) such as sfz+ or DirectWave. They usually have a 16 instrument limit. This coresponds to the 16 midi channels, right? When adding a instrument to the set of instruments I want to use (?program) it is added in a new midi channel. Is this so I can switch between which of the instruments I am playing with a controller? I am more interested in layering different sounds such as pianos and strings to make rich playable sounds. Do I simply set the controller on omni and control all midi channels, and hence all instruments in the program?

By the way, I don't have a midi controller yet. I geuss I could wait and figure it out, but I am curious and impatient.

Thanks again.

With any MIDI controller, you have the option to select which MIDI channel you are operating on. Each channel would have it's own sound/instrument which is set within whatever sampler you are using.

Since you want to layer sounds, all you would do is set the instruments you want to layer to the same MIDI channel.

So let's say within your sampler, you have a piano sound on channel one and a string sound on channel two, if you want both of these instruments to play simultaneously (layering), just set both to the same midi channel within your sampler.
If you set them both to channel one, make sure you have channel one selected on your MIDI controller as well.

This IMO is the best way to do it.
