A- sounds the smoothest
B- sounds tighter
C/D- sounds more compressed

Post

A sounds most 'natural'
B and D seem to have some frequencies pushed harder than other and even a touch of distortion
C seems to have more pressure and a bit of coloring

so A, then C, then B and D

Post

What are the limiter be used for A B C D?
Dynamic is improtant than the loudness.

It was a redundant rant to begin with, from both of you.

Don't you think you two monkeys are taking this just a *little* too seriously?
not really.

I think the point has been made. Everybody has different taste in limiters yada yada yada. Either that or they're all done with the same limiter etc.

So post the results! :-o

So?

Which are the A-B-C-D limiters?

Post

We don't want to know, really!! Publishing "who-is-who" will open further (nevereding) debates why bmanic did't set longer release time at X, lower the t/h at Y,... blah-blah-blah

Whee! You guys have no patience.. so ok, I'll spill the beans but first here are my comments:

First of all the test has been more than successful at least for me as I now got a new understanding of how some people listen to things so thank you all who commented here! Second, I want to emphasize once more that this test is in now way prooving anything else than that everybody has f**ked up taste and that I can't set a limiter properly! :P

Ok, so, I personally prefer Limiter A, then C, then B and then D of the heavy limiting test. The reason is, like I explained earlier, that I find the drums to be the key element in this track, together with the accoustic guitar and these are all preserved closest to the original with limiter A. Limiter C I had a bit trouble to find satisfactory settings that didn't "pump" in a bit of a weird way. I can't exactly explain what this "weird way" is but it's somehow a bit too slow for this music. Limiter B I like the overall color of and it could probably be (ab)used to great satisfaction on a variety of material but on this particular track it simply makes the drums go way into the background. It also was the limiter that was hardest to push for loudness (I originally planned to go for +8dB of gain reduction to really show the defects of all limiters but this damn bugger simply wouldn't let me :) ). Limiter D I quite like on the light limiting side but once it's hit harder it simply distorts too early and mushes things up. Anyways, enough of that, here is the solution:

Limiter A = iZotope Ozone
Limiter B = Kjaerhus MPL-1 pro
Limiter C = Voxengo Elephant
Limiter D = TLS Pocket Limiter

An interesting little detail is that from the people who commented in this thread (except Left Headphone who didn't comment on a favourite) the votes of the thread itself are (counting what non-edited posts here, at this time, mentioned):

iZotope Ozone = 8 (including my own vote) votes
MPL-1 = 9 votes
Elephant = 7 votes
Pocket Limiter = 0 votes

Now flame away! Cheers!
