What's wrong with free?

Nothing, but I'm guessing he has everything free that he wants. If he wants more but has exhausted his free resources, chances are he's going to move on to good and cheap.

But, then again, some folk just like spending money.

Yep, pretty much the case. I have bought stuff before now mind you, I own quite a few Audio Damage products (after your demo's for the filterbank, I bought it straight away!) and also loads of others I can't recall right now.
