the most interesting thing i find from these threads is understanding how differently everyone hears and prioritises things. can only help improve your general awareness.

i dont think bmanic should post the results... ever. :hihi:

#edit: woops too late.

Another interesting little bit:

Both Aleksey and Torben seem to have found their own limiters among the bunch and they obviously liked their own the most. ;)

Now how the heck do I stop the poll?? It can get distorted if it keeps going now that the results are out. Heeeelp! Moderators! Stop it! :help:

Cheers!

Hehe, cool ;-) The winner is: Torben with his MPL :-)
For me it was also not so easy to push the MPL as much as others to become a preferred loudness-level. May be I must spend more time with this baby...

True indeed! And to help secure the integrity of the poll, as of this post, here are the stats. Mind you, this is AFTER bmanic posted the results.

Limiter A 29% [21] iZotope Ozone
Limiter B 36% [26] Kjaerhus MPL-1 pro
Limiter C 23% [17] Voxengo Elephant
Limiter D 11% [8] TLS Pocket Limiter

What does this prove? We like what we like!

Funny it should turn out my favourite (C) was elephant, the one limiter whose pump I've always found useful when abused.

I have to say I suspected A was Ozone, having just heard a similar shootout at bmanic's studio on my own mix. It is most likely the transparent of the bunch, but since I'm always looking for mix enhancing pumping, it was never a favourite. The same I found on this test.

On the shootout with my own mix I preferred MPL pro.

Fun little shootout bmanic, although nothing has changed when it comes my preferences of any of the limiters. "The right tool for the job" is the only thing I can say of any of them, entirely dependant on the music being mastered.

You can force it if you want; just try some of the presets posted here: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... &start=135

Thanks

bmanic, which limiter for ozone did you use? not want to discuss just to know :-)

Was it soft or brickwall or intelligent? Any other modules besides the limiter?maximizer?

I also thought that A was Ozone ( which I own but never used it this way) yesterday I was a little bit playing around with it and was quite amazed how differently it can sound (like the others maybe also - Mac user, so I have no experience with them).

Funny that I liked elephant the most - as I was looking for the openess that was left in the track.

Nevertheless I found it also interesting and get to know what people are listening to. And also I found it interesting that Torben und Aleksey both picked their products - you are good in dialing them in the way they like it :-)

Thanks for the test. If you could comment on the settings for ozone, would be nice.

^^i think it was intelligent

Post

It sounds that way, yes, and knowing how highly bmanic has spoken of it in the past, I'm absolutely certain it is the intelligent mode.

5% is usually considered to be a statistical error.

I'm very satisfied. In the light of this test, there is a place for enhancement in Elephant's design, but this test meant that Elephant is still pretty competitive. So, it is not lost at all. Thanks for those who voted for C. :)

Thank you bmanic for this test. Great fun.
I'm very surprised, that Ozone was my clear favourite. I expected A being Waves L3.

i think there will be far more error than that, mainly from bias.

it would be more revealing if the test was on everyone's own music. then most likely assuming competent engineering they'd be looking to 'save' the mix maybe with slightly different priorities.

personally i find elephant is still the best limiter ive ever used, i really like the balance you have between pumping/distortion/dynamics, and it makes it work on such variety. the only improvement for me would be a clipping mode like ozones. im sure thats what any dev doesnt want to hear. but id rather use that when going 3-4db+ on drum transients than any limiter. mentle i know. :help:

It was intelligent mode. Release set to 0.8, so nearly clipping. I don't find the other limiter modes of Ozone any good. No other processing was used.

Exactly what I was thinking, there is going to be a margin of error.
