As the title suggests, i'm a big fan of the BEHRINGER Composer MDX-2200's sound and am now searching for a VST sound-a-like.

The Behringer had a distinct sound that i haven't heard in a vst yet. The attack, the compressing, the sound.. one of the best compressors i've had basically.

Suggestions?

Seriously?

You see...I've still got my Composer, and really almost never use it any more.
A) I've got better h/w compressors
B)I've got better s/w compressors

It's a VCA comp...so naturally it does have some advantages over s/w - my first obvious target is pumping - especially on bass-heavy tracks. Not many s/w comps handle that at all well. So the Composer can pump a bit better. I can't say I ever heard anything wonderful in its attack or general sound though. I personally use Kjaerhus for compression for most things apart from heavy pumping, specialFX and distorted limiting (can't beat a good VCA comp for that intentional overdriven limiting) Having said that...a Composer would be far from my first choice for that type of limiting :? . others seem to recommend Voxengo marquis (I can't stand his GUIs, so I don't use them...) and I've heard some good reports about Sonitus. UAD have some very good compressors. And there are some esoteric ones like Neodynium.

I think for everyday compressor duties...any of those could produce more character than a Composer, or at least more transparent results at lower settings. The main thing I noticed about my Composer? You can make almost any decent s/w compressor sound like it if you roll off a couple of dB from maybe 6KHz onwards. The Composer is quite a bad culprit for losing the highs - especially noticeable when over a full mix. I'm being absolutely serious - you possibly are mistaking the dulling of highs from the Composer with warmth - that's an easy mistake to make with alot of h/w. Try any quality s/w comp and roll off the highs...it may surprise you.

I have the Tube Composer, and I like iit for some things, I can say I still use it from time to time, but I found Blockfish to sound a lot like my Tube Composer, and honestly I dont really like BLockfish!! How does that happen?

I assume it was one of those things (buying the tube Composer) that was just a good idea at the time. It happens...

I bought a 303 + 606 for 110 quid bloody years ago. I sold the 303 for 110 quid and kept the 606. Precisely 1 year later, the price of 303s increased by 8 times. It was a good idea at the time (not sure why though... :? ). I had to give away the 606 to get rid of it when I came to my senses.

I bought a Tascam desk once....

It was a good idea at the time to buy a Juno106. Most expensive ashtray holder I ever bought.

I thought it was a good idea to turn off my engine going down a hairpin hill to save petrol in a power-steering car.
Fortunately I'm still alive...and hopefully a bit less stupid.

Those emoticons just don't express the horror of it, once I realised what I'd done.

:hihi:

There must be an emoticon of a sickly shade of green, taking a very loose dump somewhere...that might do it.
